As a reminder- since mass is conserved in both physical and chemical processes - all
equations must have coefficients in front that allow the reactions to be balanced.

While not on the CED explicitly, there do appear to be a couple of questions
that ask you to construct reactions so let's practice a couple of those.

Example 1: The reaction between solid sodium metal and aqueous barium
hydroxide- Ba(OH)2 - forms solid barium and and sodium hydroxide - NaOH.

In reactions, chemists can use a net ionic equation to simplify
reactions- these are typically done with precipitation reactions.
These show up on the AP test A LOT (and are super fun!!)

Example:
Step 1: Starting with the molecular equation break everything into
-

ions that is aqeous. Keep all other particles together (duh).

Ions that appear on both sides DO NOT parciptate in the

actual reaction and are called spectator ions.

pT¥yt2I÷→PbIi€
Step 3: Re-write the reaction. This final reaction is called a net
ionic equation.
You try- write the complete and net ionic equations. Identify the
spectator ions.

Net Ionic Equations and Gravimetric Analysis: H
Precipitation reactions coupled with gravimetric m-

analysis can allow you to solve for the

concentration of an unknown solute.

Gravimetric analysis basically means-

collecting a solid made by an unknown through
filtration (see image at right) and analyzing its
mass.
