8th Grade Confirmation Project

Dear 8th Grade Parents,

The 8th Grade Confirmation Project is an important component of the confirmation experience.
It is an opportunity for students to creatively make their personal statement of faith in
preparation for being confirmed next year. At baptism, parents promise to raise their children
in the faith. Confirmation is the affirmation of that promise. Your children are now old enough
to have their own personal faith stories. But they still need you! You are an important part of
their faith stories; but they can now apply some critical thought to what their faith means to
them personally and choose how to express it! We know that each child has different gifts and
passions, and we look forward to seeing what each student chooses to do for their project.

Enclosed with this letter are options your child can choose from for their project. Your child
should choose which project they want to do and let me know via Google form what their
choice is no later than February 3. Since we are meeting online right now, I won’t have the
opportunity to talk to the kids about these projects in person this year. Please share and discuss
this packet with your child and help them choose the best option for them.

Proposals are due no later than Wednesday, February 3rd

Projects are due no later than Wednesday, April 28th

With your child’s consent, we plan to display these projects for our congregation to enjoy in the
weeks prior to their Affirmation of Baptism service. If you have any questions please feel free to
contact me.

In Peace,

8th GRADE CONFIRMATION PROJECT OPTIONS

OPTION 1: SERVICE PROJECT ALONE OR WITH FAMILY

Service projects are a great way to show your faith and benefit your community. We ask that the service
project is an original idea that you develop, not routine service or volunteer work (serving at Monday Night
Meals or going to Feed My Starving Children would not count). The project should benefit the church, your
school, community, or other non-profit organization. Projects should include at least 25 person-hours of work.
For example, if you have four other people help you with your project, and you each work for five hours, that
would be 25 hours (5x5=25). In addition to the project proposal, projects must be approved by the
organization benefiting from the project. If you see a need in your community, this is your chance to step up
and help out!
Your finished project should be a written explanation answering the following:
-Explain the service project.
-Why did you choose this?
-What steps did you take to prepare for this service project?
-What did you expect going into it?
-What surprised you during the project?
-What did you learn?
-How did this experience impact your faith?

OPTION 2: CREATE AN ORIGINAL ART PROJECT

-Drama (Performed live or recorded)
-Monologue (Performed live or recorded)
-Poem
-Movie
-Slideshow
Whatever you choose to create should be accompanied by a brief explanation about how your creation
reflects your faith. This does not need to be an essay but should be at least 200 words, such as a small display
card you might see under a piece of art in a gallery.

OPTION 3: RESEARCH PAPER ON LUTHERAN SACRAMENTS (Baptism & Communion)

-Should be at least 750 words
-What is a sacrament?
-What do they mean to the Lutheran Church?
-What do they mean to you?
OPTION 4: RESEARCH PAPER ON A CHARACTER FROM THE BIBLE WHO INTERESTS YOU
