1 About the PV charger
The PVC 2200B is a photovoltaic battery charger for telecommunication systems,
converting solar energy to -48V telecom power systems. The flexible design supports
application in standalone applications or hybrid power applications in cooperation genset
supply, AC grid, wind energy or fuel cell supply. The modular format offers easy
scalability. The high efficiency in terms of power conversion and MPPT performance
creates direct and indirect savings in the overall power conversion in rectifiers and cooling
systems as well. The compact size and the extended operating temperature range make
this series applicable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Typical applications include telecommunications infrastructure powered from high cost
primary energy sources (e.g. diesel genset powered in offgrid and badgrid locations) and
where the telecommunication infrastructure reduces CO2 emissions.

The converters do not contain any user serviceable parts. A faulty converter module must
be replaced as a complete unit.

The installation description must be strictly adhered to.

1.2 Safety
The converter is a system component and usage is intended for installation in restricted
access locations (RAL).

Warning! The maximum open cell DC voltage of the PV array must not exceed
the maximum PV charger input voltage of 350Vdc. The maximum PV array
configuration and resulting maximum open cell voltage has to be respected
under the coldest expected ambient temperature.

Warning! The DC supply is of the high voltage type and accidental contact by
humans is life threatening. Therefore, all system components and wiring from
the PV charger to PV panel have to be isolated according to safety standards.

Warning! Before performing any repair or maintenance work to the DC supply

from a PV panel, make sure that the main switches in the PV-DC input
distribution in the junction box are open and safely disconnect the PV panels
from the system. This has to also be followed for maintenance and repair work
done during the night, when low light can still generate dangerous voltages.

3 Functional description

3.1 Input voltage range

The PV charger has the following defined normal operating input voltage range:
50 ... 350V DC

If the input voltage rises above the maximum input voltage limit, the converter still
operates with normal functionality. DC input voltages above 350Vdc do not occur when
the safety instructions related to the PV panel arrangement are applied correctly.
The converter has an inbuilt protection for DC input voltages higher than 400Vdc. The
converter will not work but will remain safe. Exposure to DC overvoltage for greater
voltages, or for a longer period, may cause converter failure.

If the input voltage falls below the minimum input voltage limit, the converter switches off.
The converter switches on when the input voltage is within the input voltage limits. At
start-up solar irradiation must reach a sufficient level so that the PV panel is able to
generate 85W electrical DC power to maintain the basic operation of the PV charger. If
this minimum electrical DC power from the PV panel is not reached, the PV charger will
perform continuous automatic shutdown and restart a trial until the solar irradiation
reaches a level to provide this minimum electrical DC power.

Figure 1. PVC 2200B-48 ID:A1 input characteristics

Note! The PV charger must not be used as a normal DC/DC converter and be
powered from any high voltage DC source. Due to the MPPT control the PV
charger can only be supplied from PV panels.

3.2 Output characteristics
The converter has a constant output power characteristic to meet the demands of optimal
power supply usage for electronic constant power loads. The available power on PV
charger output is dependent on the installed peak power of the PV panels and irradiation.
The output characteristic shows the maximum limits of the converter, in case there is a
higher peak power capacity installed on the PV panel side.

Figure 2. PVC 2200B-48 output characteristics

3.3 Output voltage

An output voltage of 54.5 V is predefined. If an ORION controller with a voltage
programming function is used, the converter output voltage can be adjusted. The output
voltage range of the converter is 42 V to 58 V.

3.4 Output current

The typical factory setting for the output current limit is 46 ADC.

3.5 Over-voltage protection OVP

The converter is equipped with selective over-voltage protection (OVP). If the output
voltage exceeds an internally set limit, the converter shuts down. Combining OVP with a
current measuring condition allows selectivity for a converter connected in parallel to
ensure that only the affected converter is shut down.

The factory setting is 59.5 V.

The converter OVP shutdown level can be configured to a lower level down to 56V by
means of using an ORION controller.

Product description PV charger PVC 220B Functional description 5

Note! In case the OVP shutdown is configured to a lower value, the maximum
voltage control of the converter is limited to a 1V lower value than the configured
OVP level. This is a safety measure that normal system functions will not trigger
OVP shutdown of the PV charger.

Removing the converter for approximately two seconds from the system resets the
converter after an OVP shutdown.
Depending on the permissions, the OVP reset can also be done via an ORION controller.

3.6 MPPT
The converters have an inbuilt MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) algorithm
integrated to harvest the maximum available energy from the PV panels at any time as
long as the power can be used to charge the battery and/or supply the power demand of
the infrastructure. In case the battery reaches fully charged condition and the power
demand from equipment is smaller than the actual available power from the PV panel, the
PV charger will automatically exit the MPPT mode and will convert only the power
demand of the infrastructure and protect the battery against overcharging. The PV
charger will also return to MPPT automatically when there is no longer any excess power
from the PV panel.

Every 30 minutes the PV charger automatically processes a short scan of the operating
point over all PV panel characteristic to ensure that the PV charger is always operating at
the real maximum peak point of the PV panel characteristic. This process ensures the
best possible energy harvest also during abnormal cases (partial shading, array of
different PV panel types).

3.7 Current sharing

Due to the individual string concept, PV chargers do not have any current sharing
functionality amongst themselves to ensure that the PV chargers will harvest the
maximum available solar power in any conditions.

3.8 Cooling
The converter uses a fan to force air through it from front to rear.

3.9 Thermal management

The converter is protected by four integrated thermal sensors monitoring the fresh intake
air temperature and temperatures at critical components inside the converter

Thermal management protects the converter against overheating by reducing the output
current limit to limit internal temperature (as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4).

6 Product description PV charger PVC 220B Functional description

To protect against interrupted air flow and fan failure, the converter is shut down as soon
as the internal temperature reaches a critical value. If the temperature returns to within
normal limits, the converter restarts automatically. If the airflow is interrupted or the fan
fails, the converter protects itself against overheating and recognizes three unsuccessful
restart attempts within a short period. In that case, the converter remains shutdown and
generates an alarm.

Removing the converter for approximately two seconds from the system resets the
rectifier after a latched OTP shutdown.
Depending on the permissions, the OTP reset can also be done via an ORION controller.

Figure 4. Thermal characteristics for battery recharge condition (48Vdc)

3.10 Galvanic isolation

The PV charger has a galvanic isolation from PV panel to the -48Vdc battery system,
which is an important factor in protecting sensitive telecommunication equipment against
high energy surge pulses created by lightning strikes.

The converter can be fixed in a shelf by moving the clip to the outside (locked) position.
To unlock the converter in a shelf, the clip must be moved to the inside position.

Warning! The PVC 2200B-48 is slot compatible with the DPR 2000 / DPR 2900
rectifier series. In hybrid systems where both rectifier and PV charger are
applied in the systems, please make sure that the PV charger is inserted into the
right slot with the power feed from the PV panel and not into a slot with an AC
feed.

Note! The PV charger has RenE printing on the front panel to support easy
identification.

4.3 Configuration
Upon installation to a system with an ORION controller, the converter is automatically
configured according to the application settings. In systems without a controller, the
converter operates with the factory-set standard configuration.

Some special system functionalities with ORION require an acknowledge process for the
converter. In such a case, the user is guided by ORION to press the “Config” button on
the front of the converter.
