According to the recorded history of the hospitality industry, describe how did the Sumerians
start the accommodation/lodging business.
Answer: Sumerians from Mesopotamia are skilled in farming and cattle breeding. They had abundant
harvest of grain that surplus occur. Thus, these people decided to trade such surplus to neighboring
culture. Such trade made them invent money and writing that leads to the evolution of business. Because
of trading, travelers became rampant and so does the need to provide accommodations. The trade happens
on a stopping point called ‘junction points’ (trading center and evolved into cities). Before arriving to
such point, the long journey segment of travelers requires a need of lodging facilities. Example of these
were in China called ‘Relay House’ ,in Persia the ‘Khans’ and in Rome which they called the ’Tabernas’.
2. In ancient Greece, how did they develop the accommodation/lodging industry?

Answer: A large part of the traveling public in ancient Greece were missionaries, priests, pilgrims and
other religious elements. The accommodation were meager providing only shelter and the barest
sustenance. In such times, slaves were the one running the accommodation. These salves were owned by
the temple or holy place.

3. During the Industrial revolution, what made the accommodation a great demand?
Answer: What made the accommodation a great demand is that people started to work in the cities thus
living their hometown and started traveling away from home.
4. What innovations that Ellsworth Statler added to the The Buffalo Statler Hotel that made her the
first "modern hotel"?
Answer: In 1908, Ellsworth Statler opened what many believed to be the first “modern hotel” – the
Buffalo Statler Hotel in 1908 because of its modern innovation. Those innovations included: Fire doors,
light switches, private bathrooms, key holes for easy access, circulating hot and cold water, full – length
mirror and morning newspaper.
5. Name at least 4 prominent personality and describe their individual contribution to the
development of the accommodation industry.

Answer:

 Mobley (1925) in Cisco Texas – the first by Conrad Hilton – the patriarch of the Hilton Chain of
Hotels, one of Ellsworth Stalter’s rival

 J. Willard Marriott - who started in the restaurant business first, opened his first hotel called the
Twin Bridges in 1957

 In 1953, The First Holiday Inn Hotel was founded by Kemmons Wilson in Memphis Tennessee,
his hometowm.

 In 1908, Ellsworth Statler opened what many believed to be the first “modern hotel” – the

Buffalo Statler Hotel in 1908 because of its modern innovation.
