Health is Wealth . . . a saying perfectly said !

The popular saying goes , A sound body leads to a sound mind. But most of us
tend to ignore our body's well being and keep on trying to pressurize  it even when it says NO.
Ranjana Verma, a 2nd semester Nano Science student was unable to walk all of
a sudden just as she was about to stand from her study table. She was rushed immediately to
the doctor, thanks to the Emergency Services of the Health Centre at Tezpur University. She had
been ill for the last few days and was taking medicines on her own without consulting a doctor,
ignoring her illness. At the Health Centre, along with a pinch of injection she was given good
dose of scolding too for ignoring the timely services of a doctor."Who asked you to be a doctor
of your own? Taking two such strong antibiotics along with two painkillers and that too from
unauthorised medishops would have dire consequences on  you",said the doctor in charge of
the Emergency Service. He even asked her to come the next morning for a blood test.
Such are the unmeasurable benefits one can reap if a health centre is properly
organised as the one at Tezpur University. The staff, students and the employees have nothing
to worry about even at midnight of an hour, specially on weekends. Earlier the Health Centre
used to remain open only at specific hours without any emergency services. But recently the
health centre shifted from its previous place to a huge complex adjacent to the school
Takshashila.
On having a face to face interaction with the Chief Medical Officer in charge
Dr.D.K Goswami, "The basic facilities at the health centre are quite good. We have out-patient-
department(OPD) facility along with the emergency services, we still do not have indoor facility
till yet.The OPD runs for 2 sessions - morning 8am-12pm and noon 3pm-5pm on weekdays and
on weekends we have only one session i.e from 10am-12pm.
At present the health centre is running with 3 doctors with an additional doctor
being available round the clock, i.e for emergency purpose. The emergency services remain
open even after the OPD is closed. Apart from these we have other consultants that are being
employed by the administration of the University. The health centre has 1 child specialist,1
gynecologist, both are available twice a week, and 1 lady psychologist Dr.Devi Bhuyan that visits
every Thursday from 5pm-7pm.She hails from Tezpur town itself but is currently residing in the
States". When asked how are they appointed? he replied that, "it is mostly done by the
administrative department and they are not made known to us of the basis and procedure of
such appointments".
The medical lab which was not there in the previous health centre have been
freshly opened in this newly established one."Mainly common routine investigation like blood
test, sugar test, blood for mp test, for typhoid etc. are usually done  here. "There is even an ECG
lab, ultra sound lab and scanning lab which remains open only on Thursday from 6pm
onwards.1 radiologist has been appointed for taking care of the ultra sound and scanning lab.
All the medicines, lab test fee, even the charges for doctors' services are free for the staff,
students and employees of the University's community. The amount  of Rs.500 that is taken
from the students at the time of admission every semester is too meagre for incurring such a
huge expenditure. The prices of the medicines that are available here is too high, even the lab
tests are expensive which cannot be bore just by paying Rs.500", he further added.
"We have a number of beds meeting our emergency purpose, but not adequate
staff to handle everything out here," said he regarding the functioning of the staff. In spite of
lack of manpower, the rest of it is okay, whether it is flu, typhoid, or any other seasonal illness
that are frequently seen among the patients, we have full services for it.
Asked whether if an accident occurs in the campus will the health center be
able to handle it, he promptly said, “of course we will. Cause there is full stock of emergency
medicines and we can very well handle such crisis situation.”
One can now wonder how much money the administration spends every year
in meeting the expenditure of the Health center. On meeting the Finance Officer,
Administrative department Mr. R.R Bora personally, he said that other than the salary of the
staff including the doctors, Rs.8lacs for medicines and dressing and Rs.40000 for contingencies
(pen, pencil and stationary) are allotted per annum out of which only Rs.35000 against Rs.
40000 were spent and Rs.6.5lac were spent against 8lac for the year 2009-2010.

It can now be rightly said that the authorities of the University have taken full
care to envisage that nothing goes wrong when it comes to the health of the students, staff and
employees of the University concerned.
