In lines 1-8, how does the writer use language and structure to show that the visitor is concealing
a secret.

The visitor being putting on his “coat and hat” in fire vigorously burning room. Yet having no
condolence for the hospitable Mrs. The man in the coat “standing with his back at her” indicates the
fact that he is trying to secrete something. The interest of not talking to anyone precisely not having
any mutual gaze indicates the habit of a criminal hiding himself from the laws. The irregularity
clearly visible by his appearance “glove hands clasped” makes the reader visualize that he is
concealing a secret. Moreover he being “lost in thoughts” gives the reader an explained reason of
the visitor being hiding a secret. Furthermore his blurred answer to the Mrs. when asking whether
she can take off his “coat” progress the mysteriousness. The visitor’s inaudible reply “No” “without
turning” shows that he is still in progress to hide himself from the landlady.

He still presenting himself under the “coat collar” which helps him to hide his “cheeks and face”.
The stillness until the Mrs. was out of the room “did not stir until she was closing the door”,
covering him with a “white cloth” and his forehead “covered by a white bandage” shows the reader
that the visitor is concealing a secret.
