CARES ACT: 


HIGHER EDUCATION
EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND

WHAT IS THE
CARES ACT?
• In response to covid-19, the
federal government established
the CARES Act.
• The CARES Act, the Higher
Education Emergency Relief Fund
in particular, provides funding to
institutions to provide emergency
financial aid grants to students.
Students whose lives have been
disrupted & many of whom are
facing financial challenges and
struggling to make ends meet.
GOOD NEWS FOR NONCREDIT STUDENTS
(CONTINUING EDUCATION)
• Before June 17, 2020, there were specific student
requirements that needed to be meet in order for
students to be eligible for CARES Act relief funds. 
• This included number of college credits enrolled in,
legal status, and others.
• These requirements were removed on June 17, 2020.
• This new ruling made noncredit students eligible to
access CARES Act Relief funds to assist them with any
financial obstacles created by the COVID-19 pandemic
so that they may continue with the pursuit of their
educational/training goals. 
PURPOSE & AMOUNT
OF ASSISTANCE

• Assist students with their


studies and not experience
delays in accomplishing their
educational/training goals
due to the COVID-19
pandemic including
textbooks, software,
hardware devices (iPads,
laptops, etc.), hot-spots,
food, transportation, housing,
etc. 
• Amount = $300
In Fall 2019 or Spring 2020, a noncredit
student must have:
• attended at least 72 hours of College
Development Career Preparation (CDCP)
instruction
ELIGIBILITY • either completed a course or earned a
CRITERIA Student must
Satisfactory be currently
Progress enrolled in a
(SP) grade.
CDCP course for the 2020 Summer Term.

CDCP courses are those classes that are


included in a State of CA approved
certificate.

GUIDANCE FOR SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ON THE
APPLICATION
• Your Declared Major
• Enter what you are currently studying (i.e., ESL, General Office Clerk, H.S. diploma,
etc.)

• Number of units enrolled in Spring 2020


• Enter “one”

• Expected Graduation Date


• Enter when you expect to obtain the certificate you are pursuing, transition to Santa
Ana College credit classes, receive HS diploma or pass the GED, etc.
PAYMENT

• Students will be notified by email if they will be awarded funds.


• It will be sent to the email the student included in the
registration form (aka when they signed up for classes).
• If no email was included in the registration form, the message
will be sent to the student’s SAC email address.
• Students will be instructed to open a BankMobile online bank
account. 
• $2.99 charge
• If the student does not open a BankMobile account, a check will be
automatically mailed to whatever home address is on file for the
SAC School of Continuing Education. This is the address the
student included in the registration form.
• BankMobile accounts disburse about a week after being awarded.
Checks take an addition 3-4 weeks to disburse.

• Will this affect your immigration status?


• This funding is meant for all students, including DREAMERS. It is up to you to make that decision. We,
SAC School of Continuing Education, can’t advise you on this matter.

• She’s currently teaching a one day, 2-hour class on how to access & use student SAC email
accounts.
