Chapter_ 12_ Solar_ System_ Part_ 3_ Answer

ROTATIONALDIRECTION OF THE PANET

1. How do all planets in Solar system rotate ? (pg. 260)
They rotate on their own axis at different angle.
2. Rotational angle and direction of the planets in the solar system (Pg. 260, Figure
12.3)
(A) Planets rotate from east to west : Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune
(B) Planet rotates from west to east : Venus
(c) Planet rotates on its side : Uranus

Hypothetical Situation related to the Solar System (Pg. 260)

What happens if the Earth rotates slower or stops rotating ?

1. Longer day and night duration in two different parts of the Earth.
2. More desert area in parts of the Earth that faces the Sun.
3. Change in high and low tides.
4. Temperature will drop in areas of the Earth that do not receive sunlight.

Natural satellites (Pg. 261, Figure 12.5)

1. What are natural satellites ?
Objects that move around planets on their own orbit.
2. Name the natural satellite of Earth. Moon.

How would the condition and appearance of the Earth from the Moon ? (Pg. 261,
Photograph 12.2)
1. The Moon rotates on its own axis.
2. At the same time, the Moon also moves around the Earth on its orbit.
3. The duration taken for the Moon to rotate on its own axis and orbit the Earth is
about the same, which is 27 days.
4. Therefore, the same surface of the Moon would be facing the Earth at all time.
5. The Earth is four times bigger than the Moon.
