FINAL EXAMINATION

PROBLEM I.
A horizontal curve is to be designed for a section of a highway having a design speed of 60
km/hr.
(a) If the physical conditions restrict the radius of the curve to 150 m, what value
is required for the superelevation at this curve? Assume coef. Of friction of 0.15.
(b) Is this a good design?
Instruction:
1. Subtract the 150m radius with your last 2-digit ID, and
2. Add the speed with last 2-digit ID/10.

PROBLEM II. Subtract the speed with last 2-digit ID/10.

Two sets of students are collecting traffic data at two sections, xx and yy, of a
highway 450 m apart. Observations at xx show that five vehicles passed that section
at intervals of 3, 4, 3, and 5 sec, respectively. If the speeds of the vehicles were 50, 45,
40, 35, and 30 km/h respectively, determine (a) the time
mean speed, (b) the space mean speed, and (c) the density on the highway.

PROBLEM III. Add the speed as shown in the table with last 2-digit ID/10.
An urban transportation department of a city planning office has obtained at random 20 speed
data as shown on an urban freeway. Use 7 number
of intervals, determine or show the following, 66.60 56.50 73.00 65.90 60.30
80.10 59.50 65.20 55.00 50.80
a) Mean and standard deviation of the sample
66.90 67.00 68.00 62.30 67.40
distribution, 76.40 57.60 60.00 71.30 63.30
b) The most desirable speed limit on the highway, and
c) What percentage of the vehicles will be exceeding the speed limit if it is arbitrarily fixed at
70kph, probably due to air pollution requirements and safety?
