ACTIVITY TITLE: SYSTEMS OF THE BODY

LEARNING TARGETS: a. identify and describe the parts of the reproductive system and their
functions
b. explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male
reproductive systems
REFERENCE(S) Exploring the Realms of Science, Sta. Ana, Susan T. pp 123-144
(Title, Author, Pages)
CONCEPT NOTES
Hormones are organic substances secreted by both plants and animals that regulate physiological
activities and maintain homeostasis. They carry out their functions by inducing responses from specific
organs or tissues that are adapted to react.
The hormones of the reproductive system (sex hormones) are steroids that are secreted by tissues
from the coelomic epithelium.
FEMALE HORMONES
1. ESTROGENS – these are substances that bring the cyclical onset of heat which makes the
female sexually active and receptive to male. They also contribute to the events of menstrual
cycle.
2. PROGESTINS – Progesterone, the most important progestin, is concerned with the
maintenance of pregnancy of those that produce living offspring. It also prepares the uterus for
the implantation of fertilized eggs and maintenance once the egg is implanted.
MALE HORMONES
1. ANDROGENS – secreted by the testis, these are responsible for the maintenance of male
characteristics and behavior.
a. FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) – this is secreted from the pituitary gland which
stimulates the growth of the seminiferous tubules and promotes cell division that results
in the production of mature sperm.
b. LH (luteinizing hormone) or ICHS (interstitial cell stimulating hormone) – this comes from
the pituitary gland that promotes the development of the endocrine tissue within the
testes.
2. TESTOSTERONE – the most important androgen. Aside from maintaining male characteristics,
male behavior and spermatic tubules, in the presence of normal amounts of growth hormones, it
promotes growth of bony skeleton.
THINK ABOUT THIS!
1. Why is it important that a human body is secreting specific hormones? Justify your answer.
_________________________________________________________________________
2. What are the functions of the female and male hormones on one’s reproductive system?
_________________________________________________________________________
3. Give at least 5 disorders concerning sex hormones.

CONCEPT NOTES
Menstruation, every 28 days or so, one primary follicle that contains one ovum matures under the
influence of hormones from anterior pituitary, hypothalamus, and the ovary. It is the flow of blood as
lining of the endometrium degenerates and shed off.
It is not for life. The first menstrual flow, also known as the menarche, signals that a girl enters a
transition time called puberty.
Menopause, when a woman reaches late forties or early fifties, her menstruation eventually stops.
DISORDERS CONCERNING THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE
1. Amenorrhea – this is the absence of menstruation for three months or longer in a sexually active
woman who is not pregnant or breastfeeding.
Conditions that may cause Amenorrhea,
 Eating disorder or Anorexia, Bulimia
 Excessive exercise and poor diet
 Hormonal problems involving hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, ovary or adrenal
glands
 Medications (contraceptives)
 Very low body weight
2. Menorrhagia/Hypermenorrhea – this is a condition of heavy or prolonged menstrual periods,
characterized by menstrual period longer than seven days or very heavy flow of blood.
Conditions that may cause Menorrhagia,
 Adenomyosis or endometriosis (disorder of the uterine lining)
 Anti-inflammatory or anticoagulant medication
 Hormonal imbalance
 Ectopic pregnancy (fertilized egg implants in fallopian tube instead of uterus)
 Use of IUD (Intra uterine device – contraception)
 Uterine Cancer
3. PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome or Dysmenorrhea) – this is a condition wherein one experiences
severe pain and discomfort before/during menstruation enough to interfere with daily normal
activities.
Conditions that may cause PMS,
 STD (sexually Transmitted Disease)
 Endometriosis
 Extreme stress and anxiety
 Pelvis Inflammatory Disease (infection in the reproductive system)
4. PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) – this is characterized by depression or severe
irritability before and during menstrual period. (it may increase the risk of suicide)

THINK ABOUT IT! List down at least 5 ways on how to prevent disorders concerning the
Menstrual cycle.
