CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter explains about background, problem, and limitation of

problem, the objective of the study, the significance of the study and definition

of key term.

1.1 Background

Debate is an activity in which opposite points of view are presented and

argued. Debate is the process of presenting ideas or opinions which two

opposing parties try to defend their idea or opinion. Debate is a formal type of

discussion. Debate is one of the techniques to increase students’ speaking

ability. Debate can also increase students’ critical thinking, because in debate

their will give the argumentation based on the data and for strengthen their

argumentation. Defines debate is the process of inquiry and advocacy, a way of

arriving at a reasoned judgment on a proposition. Individuals may use debate to

reach a decision in their own minds; alternatively, individuals or groups may

use it to bring others around to their way of thinking (Austin J. Freeley and

David L. Steinberg, 1961 : 19). According to Agustina and Bahrani (2016:2-3),

english debate activities require students not only to be able to express their

ideas in English, but also requires students to be able to master the global

knowledge and issues, to analyze, to make judgments, and to convince the

public. In the debate, students will be exposed to the real problems facing a
society or a nation.

Debate has many aspects of assessment that will determine whether a debater

can win a debate. The assessment aspects in the debate include manner, matter,

and method. One very important aspect of assessment in debate is the matter.

Matter is very important in debate because matter is the content or content of

the debate. Matter includes data-based arguments such as theories, expert

opinions, facts, and other material that can support the arguments of the debater.

But in reality there are many debaters whose arguments are not strong because

they are not supported by valid data and unclear facts. If the arguments

presented by the debater are not supported by valid data and theories, then the

arguments will be easily refuted by the opposing team. According to Kate and

John (2005:133), to debate effectively you must learn how to weigh impacts.

You must be able to say that your team’s arguments matter most and give

reasons for your assertion.

Based on previous research on the debate that discusses the problem of

students in practice debate in academic speaking classes (Analysis Of Students’

Manner Ability In Speaking Of Muhammadiyah University Of Bengkulu (Asep

Tian Nanda. 2020). The results of this study that had been found in this study,

students are still in fair criteria with a percentage of 24% and finding data about

elements Manner consisting of Eye Contact, Gesture, Stance, Speed, Volume

and Humor. Researchers conducted a study of 48 students divided into 2

classes. And research that has been conducted on Case study in the fourth

semester of the Department of English Education, Muria Kudus University in

the Academic Year 2017/2018 (Astuti, Ayu Puji. 2018.) The results of this

study indicate that the problem faced by students in practicing debate in

academic speaking classes it is difficult to do it practice speaking, defining

movements, making boundaries and being the first speaker in debating practice,

lack of vocabulary, refutation, expressing arguments, finding data to support

arguments, building critical thinking, in how to manage controlling eye contact

and use notes in practice debate and anxiety. And then the previous research tha

has been conducted by (Ricci Candra,2019) “An Analysis of Students

Argumentation in Speaking For Debate Classes At Fourth Semester of

Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu” with the results that many provide

strong arguments when implementing speaking for debate in class. From the

debate called matter.

Therefore the researcher want to conducting this reasearch based on the

theory of Kemendikbud. This theory has complete elements about aspects of

contact such as elements of matter : 1) Relevant, 2) Logical and 3) Consistent

for make the argument from debater be strong and can be accounted for.

However, until now, no one of the research has been carried out at this
university about these fields.
