I. LOCATION AND RATIONALE

SANTIAGO ISLAND
This is the location we chose because the only access to Santiago

Island is through barge/boat. There is an estimated total of 26 square

kilometers of flat reef and 46 kilometers of sloping reef around the island.

If people have road access to the said location, the island’s land

area can be used as a residential, commercial, agricultural or public tourist

spot which would increase the country’s income. Also, the road access to

the location would attract businessman to establish business in the area

which would lead again to more job opportunities.

Even among the miles upon miles of majestic coastline and

numerous wondrous islands in the province of Pangasinan, Santiago

Island still stands out as a rare pearl to the discerning traveler. Santiago

Island is a Philippine island with white sand beaches found off the coast of

Bolinao, Pangasinan. The island is famous for being a good place for

fishing and scuba diving as well as for its historic significance.

Historical significance: Santiago Island was the first area in

Pangasinan discovered and occupied by the Spaniards. The historical

island has been a refuge for slaves who have escaped the many

smugglers and pirates that have colonized the area over the years.

Environmental Significance – The island is a sanctuary for

migratory birds as well as having a long stretch of coral reefs in its waters.
Geography – Santiago Island is 96.7 km from Dagupan City, off

the coast of Bolinao in a quiet area known for good fishing where its

waters are abundant with bangus or milkfish. The island is accessible from

the mainland by either banca or ferry.

Tourism – Santiago Island is one of the best attractions in Bolinao.

Visitors will certainly gain an appreciation for the white sand beaches and

the surrounding waters. For adventurers, the island is a good site for

scuba diving for exploration of its diverse marine ecosystem that stretches

14 miles from Santiago Island to Lingayen Gulf. The waters around the

island are also good for fishing, as the area of Bolinao is famous for its

bangus or milkfish. Sanitago Island is also one of the 12 havens of

migratory birds identified in Pangasinan. In addition, 170 different

varieties of plants can be found in the island.

Since the island is rich in natural resources, the government can

immediately implement strict rules to regulate the island to avoid abusive

actions that would lead to the scarce of the natural resources.

The Philippines could have another “subic” or better if proper

actions are made to avoid the scarce of the natural resources in Santiago

island.

-Bridge Description

The system of bridge is concrete deck beam bridge having 20 spans;

construction of span structure from reinforce concrete supported by a beam spaced at

40m O.C.; Supported by 3.5 meters’ diameter circular column, which has a circular

footing of 6-meter diameter Span length is 40m except for the inclined member which

has 40m horizontal component. The supports and the foundation are made up of

reinforced concrete.

BRIDGE DESCRIPTION:
30 span box girder concrete bridge supported by circular reinforced
concrete columns which traverses a body of water. It is approximately 750m long
and is intended to connect the municipality of Bolinao, Pangasinan and the isolated
Islands of Santiago, Pangasinan.
III. Preliminary Design

Member Alternative Bridge System

BACASEN, Charisse (Alternative 1) Suspension bridge with Reinforced concrete as

spread footing. Steel-truss tower is connected

to the footing. Cables are made up of steel wire

Deck is supported by girders

CABALTERA, Shane (Alternative 2) Suspension bridge with Steel-truss tower as

foundation. Deck is supported by steel truss

althroughout the span. Footing is made of

reinforced concrete

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 1 vs Alternative 2. Alternative 2

is chosen. The deck is supported by steel truss.

JULATON, Eleonor (Alternative 3) Prestressed Box Girder concrete bridge

supported by circular reinforced concrete

columns.

AQUINO, Lester (Alternative 4) Concrete Deck beam bridge having 20 spans;

Construction of span structure from Reinforced

concrete supported by beam. Foundation is

made up of circular footing and circular column.

Supports are made up of Reinforced Concrete.

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 3 vs Alternative 4.

Alternative 4 is chosen. The alternatives are

almost the same. The difference is the support

of the deck.

The deck is supported by a reinforced concrete

beam in the 4th alternative

HERAMIA, Wilson Jay (Alternative 5) Beam bridge with deck made up of reinforced

concrete. The deck is supported by 4 I-beams.

The bridge is supported by reinforced concrete

abutment at the ends of the span. Foundation

in between is made up of circular column and

square spread footing.

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 4 vs Alternative 5. Alternative 4

is chosen. The alternatives are both made up of

beam bridge except the deck is supported by I-

beam in alternative 5.

PERERYAS, Christian Kim (Alternative 6) Beam bridge with deck supported by steel I-

Beam. The I-Beam is supported by a concrete

abutment at the ends of span and 3 pier

columns in between

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 4 vs Alternative 6.

Alternative 4 is chosen. Alternative 5 is similar

to Alternative 6. The beam in Alternative 6 has

a deck which is supported by I beam.

ALAMBRA, Girly (Alternative 7) Beam-Bridge with Reinforced concrete deck and

supported by Precast-Prestressed beams.

Foundation is made up of reinforced concrete

square spread footing and reinforced concrete

square column.

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 4 vs Alternative 7. Alternative 4

is chosen. Alternative 7 is also a beam bridge

with lesser foundations.

MARTIN, Nastee (Alternative 8) Arched bridge having 25 spans. Deck is made

up of reinforced concrete. Stringer used is

steel. Deck is supported by Steel I-beam. The

arch type steel-truss is supporting the Steel I-

beam. The bridge is supported by an abutment

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 2 vs Alternative 8. Alternative 2

is chosen. The suspension bridge will be chosen

between the two alternatives.

Comparison of Alternatives Alternative 2 vs Alternative 4. Alternative 4

is chosen. The beam bridge will be chosen

between the two alternatives.

IV. Conclusion
The design to be adopted by the group is alternative number 4.
