DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. What are the factors that are affecting the Composition and
Characteristics of Solid Wastes? Relate it to your municipality, how does it
affect the Solid Waste Management?

Throughout the years, the rise in the industrial challenges has come about
as response to the demands of globalization. The environment then has
been subjected to threats it has inflicted. Humanity, as one of the major
contributors, and their activities, created an avenue to the decline and
destruction of natural resources, including the huge amount of solid wate
being generated.

There are several factors affecting the composition and characteristics of

solid wastes.

a) Geographic location

b) Seasonal factors

c) Collection Frequency

d) Use of waste grinders

e) Characteristics of population

f) Extent of salvaging and recycling

g) Public attitudes
h)Legislation

The small town of Pio Duran practices effective, and efficient ways in
managing its solid waste production. Being an immense location ―composed
of coastal, highlands, and that of the lowlands. Big portion of wastes come
from commercial sectors of the town, including the coastal and that of the
town’s center. Wastes are produced more during holiday seasons. The
wastes are managed fairly with collecting three of four times a week and
with proper segregation. No waste grinders are available in the town, as far
as I am informed. Households are also the primary contributors of wastes
during certain seasons. A no segregation, no collection policy has been
inflicted to the people of Pio Duran, making them disciplined and a lot
aware of how they manage they waste.

The solid waste management of my town is so far conforming to

environmental musts and policies are strictly implemented and followed by
the people with the government facilitating.

2. Why do you think it is important to have an Environmental

Compliance Certificate?

Compliance has always been a prerequisite to whatever endeavor is relevant.

Especially when environment is far more concerned and is at risk to any of
the potential threats and hazards that may exist along the process or
operation. This is why environmental policies are made to protect the state
of the environment from harm.

Any venture, may it be big or small, should always be subjected to random

significant checks to assure the safety and compliance to environmental
protocol before operating. One of it is the Environmental Compliance
Certificate (ECC), a document or certification issued by DENR_EMB. This
should be fulfilled before the project is allowed for the next phase of
planning, the acquisition of approvals from the government agencies and
LGUs. This certifies that thy have complied with the requirements of EIA
system and that also assures the people that no negative impact would
impact the environment, including them.

SUPPLEMENTAL ACTVITY

1. Calculate the composition and moisture content of typical MSW is given in

the Table below. Which component(s) have the greatest impact on waste
moisture content? Why is this important?

COMPONENTS Composition, Moisture Content, Dry Weight,

% by wt. % lb./100 lb.
Paper 32.0 6.0 30.08
Cardboard 7.0 5.0 6.7
Plastic 6.0 2.0 5.9
Textile 2.0 10.0 1.8
Rubber 1.0 2.0 0.98
Leather 2.0 10.0 1.8
Yard Waste 18.0 60.0 7.2
Wood 5.0 20.0 4
Glass 7.0 2.0 6.9
Metals 10.0 3.0 9.7
TOTAL 90 14.94 % 75.06

Total Weight = 90

Total Dry Weight = 75.06

90 - 75.06 = 14.94 lb / 100 lb

Moisture Content = 14.94 %

Paper, as seen on the above data, has the greatest impact on waste moisture
content. This is very noticeable since paper has always been present everywhere
and in our daily use. When it comes to disposal, paper is frequently the
misplaced solid waste. Calculating the moisture content of a waste is important.
It helps us on the process of the solid waste disposal and its management.
