Charles Neville will play Monday, Nov. 15, at the Big Sur
Spirit Garden, where he’ll be joined by African kora player
Youssoupha Sidibe.
A legend in his hometown of New Orleans, Charles is a
founding member of the Neville Brothers, the unofficial
house band of the Big Easy. The second oldest Neville broth-
er, he has been performing jazz, rhythm and blues, bebop,
pop and funk for more than half a century. In 1990, his song,

Sidibe has a great affection for reggae music.
In fact, a reggae record he collaborated on,
Hasidic reggae artist Matisyahu’s “Youth,”
was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. “He’s
an amazing musician from Senegal,” Fann
offered.
Opening for Neville and Sidibe will be
vocalist Renee Wilson, who was featured in
the hit film, “Ray,” which told the story of
singer Ray Charles. Wilson played one of
Charles’ background vocalists, who per-
formed under the banner of the “Raelettes.”
“Renee is an incredible jazz and soul
singer,” Fann said.

Sidibe and Wilson, the event will serve as a
birthday party for Persay, the Big Sur Spirit

Garden’s poet-in-residence. The 77-year-old
Persay recently suffered a heart attack and
underwent open-heart surgery. A familiar
face down the coast, Persay worked at the
Lucia Lodge for 27 years.
“Persay is probably my closest friend,”
Fann explained. “We traveled all over Africa
together and he’s been with me here at the
Spirit Garden since the beginning. He and I
sometimes talked about how we wanted the
Neville Brothers to come here.”
Now, amazingly, one of the Nevilles will
perform at Persay’s birthday party.
“The Neville Brothers’ management
called me and said they had heard great
things about the Spirit Garden,” Fann added.
“They reached out to me. It’s kind of
serendipitous, especially after Persay almost
died.”
The music starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are
$20. The Spirit Garden is located on
Highway 1, about 27 miles south of Carmel.
