MCU-MH
Electrical Motor Control Unit for Three-Position Switches with Motor Operating Mechanisms
Medium-Voltage Switchgear
Technical Description
Description
1 MCU-MH (Motor Control Unit - Module Housing)
1.1 Application
The MCU-MH controls the following motor operating mechanisms for three-position switches in
medium-voltage load-break switchgear and circuit-breaker switchgear:
• Spring-operated mechanism
• Spring-operated/stored-energy mechanism
• Slow motion mechanism
The MCU-MH is mounted in the module housing on standard top-hat rails.
Application The MCU-MH is equipped with a universal wide voltage range. It can optionally be connected
to different auxiliary and motor voltages. The auxiliary and motor voltages can be combined
and do not necessarily have to be identical.
MCU-MH The MCU-MH can be used in the following medium-voltage switchgear types:
• 8DA (slow motion mechanism)
• 8DB (slow motion mechanism)
• NXPLUS (slow motion mechanism)
• NXPLUS C single busbar (spring-operated mechanism and spring-operated/stored-energy
mechanism)
• NXPLUS C double busbar (spring-operated mechanism)
• NXPLUS C high-current panels / 900 mm panels (slow motion mechanism)
• SIMOSEC (spring-operated mechanism and spring-operated/stored-energy mechanism)
• 8DJH (spring-operated mechanism and spring-operated/stored-energy mechanism)
Installation The control unit is installed on a standard top-hat rail (35 mm (1.38 in)), in the LV
compartment or in the front operating mechanism box depending on the switchgear type.
The assignment of the control unit is done according to the switchgear type by means of
different part numbers.
Wiring The lower module plug -X1.2 can be wired with a cross-section of up to 1.5 mm2 (AWG 16).
The module plugs -X1.1, -X1.3 and -X1.4 can be wired with a cross-section of up to 1.5 mm2
(AWG 16).
It is recommended to wire the MCU-MH with a maximum cross-section of 1.5 mm2 (AWG 16).
The stripping length must be at least 10 mm (0.39 in).
Two wires in one connection are not possible.
1.4 Terms
Binary inputs Command input, feedback and interlocking is done through a total of 9 binary inputs (BI).
NOTICE
Functional failure due to insufficient voltage quality
The functioning of MCU-MH may be impaired.
➭ The voltage quality of the voltages used for auxiliary and load circuits must correspond to
applicable standards.
➭ If an AC control or AC load voltage is used, which is generated directly from single-phase
inverters, earth UN2~.
NOTICE
Functional failure due to incorrect circuit of the command inputs
The functioning of MCU-MH may be impaired.
➭ For activation of the command inputs for disconnector CLOSED, disconnector OPEN,
earthing switch OPEN and earthing switch CLOSED, do not use any external switching
contacts that are equipped with capacitors > 4.7 nF connected in parallel with the contact.
NOTICE
Damage to MCU-MH due to test voltages
If the specified limits (1 kV, 1 s) are exceeded during dielectric tests according to the
standard IEC 62271-200, the MCU-MH may be damaged by too high test voltages.
➭ Before performing the dielectric test, remove the connecting plugs at the MCU-MH.

IEC version Description Type Permissible values
Control voltage DC 24...250 V
AC 50 Hz / 60 Hz 110...240 V
Drive voltage of binary inputs DC 24...250 V
AC 50 Hz / 60 Hz 110...240 V
Load voltage DC 24...250 V
AC 50 Hz / 60 Hz 110...240 V
Operating threshold of The operating threshold of the binary inputs adjusts itself dynamically to the applied auxiliary
inputs voltage.
Functional description Depending on the state of the binary interlocking inputs (BI5 / BI6), switching operations
started through the command inputs (BI1 / BI2 / BI3 / BI4) are executed or interlocked.
If the three-position switch is not activated, the MCU-MH is in de-energized mode (standby
mode).
A status change at the passive binary inputs has no effect on the condition of MCU-MH in de-
energized mode.
If the three-position switch is not in operation, the load voltage for supply of the power semi-
conductors of the H-bridge is additionally single-phase switched off through a relay, and the
power transistors of the H-bridge are separated galvanically.
The MCU-MH is switched to operating mode via one of the four active binary inputs
(disconnector CLOSED / disconnector OPEN / earthing switch CLOSED / earthing switch OPEN).
The LED status indicator lights up yellow.
With valid switching command for the current feedback status from the SWITCH POSITION
signaling switch, and with applied valid releases of the passive binary inputs, the respective
switching operation is executed. In case of active command execution, the LED status
indicator lights up green.
After execution of the switching command and feedback from the SWITCH POSITION signaling
switch, the MCU-MH first switches to operating mode. If there is no other command present,
the MCU-MH returns to standby mode automatically after approx. 2 seconds.
INFORMATION
If the MCU is replaced or the motor control unit is modified, it must be absolutely observed that
the product-specific follow-on times are set according to the Siemens stipulations.
The Siemens stipulations are given in the Technical Description "Control times for three-
position switches with motor operating mechanism".
Order number:
• 730-9011.5 (NXPLUS)
• 802-9011.5 (NXPLUS C)
• 867-9011.5 (8DA, 8DB, 8DA11/12)
Sequence of a switching ➭ After entering a command at one of the active binary command inputs
operation (disconnector CLOSED / disconnector OPEN / earthing switch CLOSED /
earthing switch OPEN), the internal voltage supply is switched on. The control unit starts up
and checks itself.
➭ The status of all binary inputs is checked and the validity of the switching operation at the
active binary input is verified.
➭ If there are no interlocking conditions at the passive binary inputs preventing the desired
switching operation, the relay for the galvanic separation closes. The motor voltage is
applied to the semiconductors of the H-bridge.
➭ The interlocking to the circuit-breaker closing circuit is opened; the circuit-breaker cannot be
closed anymore.
➭ When the motor voltage is applied to the semiconductors of the H-bridge, an internal timer
is started. The internal timer monitors the runtime of the operating mechanism.
➭ The associated semiconductors of the H-bridge are energized. The drive motor turns into
the desired direction.
➭ When the desired end position is reached, the SWITCH POSITION signaling switch feeds back
the end position. After expiration of the product-specific follow-on time, the associated
semiconductors of the H-bridge are de-energized.
➭ The internal timer is reset.
➭ The electrical motor brake is activated for 560 ms via the H-bridge, and the motor is braked
electrically.
➭ After having eliminated the motor brake, the H-bridge is again separated galvanically from
the motor voltage.
➭ The H-bridge is tested for safe isolation from supply. If safe isolation from supply was
verified for the H-bridge, the circuit-breaker "closing circuit" is released, and the interlocking
to the circuit-breaker closing circuit is eliminated.
➭ The circuit-breaker can be closed again.
➭ If there is no other command for moving the operating mechanism, the control unit
changes over to standby mode.
INFORMATION
Started switching operations are completed.
If the release conditions at the passive binary inputs (change from high signal to low signal or
vice versa) change while the operating mechanism is being moved, the started switching
operation is completed.
Output of fault signals Fault signals at the unit are displayed via a red flashing LED status indicator.
Possible causes for a fault signal:
• An incorrect sense of rotation of the motor was detected while moving the operating
mechanism from disconnector OPEN / earthing switch OPEN position to
disconnector CLOSED / earthing switch CLOSED position.
• There is an internal MCU-MH fault (watchdog).
• The feedback monitoring time (runtime monitoring of the operating mechanism) for
protecting the drive motor and the mechanical system was exceeded.
• A command for moving the operating mechanism is applied to the active command inputs
(disconnector CLOSED / disconnector OPEN / earthing switch CLOSED / earthing
switch OPEN) for more than 5 minutes, although existing interlocking conditions prevent
the execution of this command.
• A command is applied to one of the active command inputs (disconnector CLOSED /
disconnector OPEN / earthing switch CLOSED / earthing switch OPEN) for more than
5 minutes, although the associated switching operation was completed successfully.
Fault mode, clearing Options for clearing the fault mode after the cause for the fault mode was eliminated:
• Through the reset button at the device (operation of the reset button: insert a thin, pointed
object through the opening at the front side.)
• By removing and re-applying the control voltage

Remark:
With the binary interlocking inputs BI 5 and BI 6, external interlocks or releases are
implemented.
• Interlock high active (BI 5): Control unit is released with applied high signal (1)
• Interlock low active (BI 6): Control unit is released with applied low signal (0)
Interlocking inputs:
• When a high signal is applied at the binary interlocking input BI 5 and a low signal is applied
at the binary interlocking input BI 6, the disconnector or the earthing switch can be
operated via the corresponding command inputs (BI 1 / BI 2 / BI 3 / BI 4).
If the binary inputs are not used for releases or interlocks, and if the MCU-MH shall work in
non-interlocked operation, the corresponding signal must be applied at the binary inputs.
• The binary input BI 6 can also be used for 2-pole switching.

2.4 Glossary
Term Explanation
Command input Impulse for moving the operating mechanism, impulse duration: ≥ 150 ms and
< 5 min. Status change at one of the four active binary inputs (disconnector to
CLOSED position / disconnector to OPEN position / earthing switch to CLOSED
position / earthing switch to OPEN position)
Operating mode The MCU-MH is in energized state and ready to process commands. The LED
status indicator lights up yellow.
Binary input, high active Release of the motor control unit for processing a command when voltage is
applied (high / positive pole or for AC L~) at this input.
Binary input, low active Release of the motor control unit for processing a command when voltage is
applied (low / negative pole or for AC N) at this input.
Binary input, active Command input; when the status changes from low to high, the MCU-MH is
energized if the MCU-MH is in de-energized mode.
Binary input, passive Interlocking input; a status change is not followed by a change of the current
mode of the MCU-MH.
Dynamic adjustment of the Modification of the input voltage level of a binary input in accordance with the
threshold voltage applied auxiliary voltage.
H-bridge Electrical circuit for reversing the sense of rotation of DC motors.
Standby mode The MCU-MH is de-energized internally, and is energized by a status change at
one of the four active binary inputs. (Energizing is done automatically upon
command input by means of status change / change of signal level from low to
high or viceversa). No indication via the LED status indicator.
Threshold voltage Input voltage level which is detected by a binary input. As of this level, the status
of the binary input is changed.
Fault mode Only in case of internal fault of the control unit: Except for the fault "incorrect
sense of rotation of motor", the interlocking to the circuit-breaker is activated.
The LED status indicator lights up red.
The fault mode is reset by switching the auxiliary voltage off and on, or by
operating the covered reset button at the front side of the unit.
Circuit-breaker interlocking Relay contact, 1 NC, floating; opens when the command to move the operating
mechanism is given.
Mode changeover Changeover from operating mode to standby mode takes place automatically
after execution and successful feedback of the last command.
Changeover from standby mode to operating mode is done by a status change
at one of the active binary inputs (command input).
