Practice #1. Identification of organic and inorganic compounds

PREVIUOS ACTIVITIES

Before doing your laboratory practice, you have to answer the CANVAS questionnaire
with the name “Pre-lab Lab # 1. Identification of organic and inorganic compounds”. To
do this you should previously read the introduction of this practice to obtain more
detailed information on the theoretical concepts necessary.

INTRODUCTION

Organic compounds are very different from inorganic ones, their physical and chemical
properties differ greatly, in the following comparative table you can briefly review these
differences.

Organic compounds Inorganic compounds

Formed mainly by C and H, as well as O and
Formed by different combination of elements
N. In small amount also: S, P, and X
(metals and non-metals).
(halogens).
Insoluble in water, except when having a
very electronegative element such as
oxygen.  Soluble in water due to the presence of ionic
and polar covalent bonds.
They are formed by non-polar covalent
bonds.
Flamable Non-flamable
Low melting and boiling points High melting and boiling points
Do not conduct electricity when mixed in
Conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
water.

OBJECTIVE

The student will classify 6 substances as organic or inorganic based on their physical and
chemical properties..
METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS

Watch carefully the video of the practice protocol, with the information provided in the
video complete the following table, you will use them later to make an analysis of the
experiments and obtain your conclusions

Complete the table with your results

F YES NO NO

ANALYSIS

Classify each substance as organic or inorganic, justify your answers

A YES It has a low melting
point, it is flammable, it
is not soluble, and do
not conudct electricity.
B YES It is not flammable, it is
soluble in water,
conducts electricity,
and has a high melting
point.
C YES It is flammable, it is
soluble in water, does
not conduct electricity.
D YES It is flammable, it is not
soluble in water, and
does not conduct
electricity.
E YES It is not flammable, it is
soluble in water, does
not conduct electricity,
and has a high melting
point.
F YES It is flammable, it is not
soluble in water, does
not conduct electricity.

CONCLUSIONS

Based of the objective of this practice, write your conclusions.

I liked this activity because we can see the results of experiments in a video, and write the
answers that we gather from it. This kinds of practices are the ones that are the best in my
opinion.
