Analysis in Resolving the Issue About Unintended Acceleration of Toyota Vehicles

In 2009, a lot of customers sued Toyota because of the unintended acceleration of their
vehicles. Most vehicles involved in the incidents were produced in 2002, the same year where
Toyota decided to change the car’s system into an all-electronic and wire system. Toyota
reported that the incidents are caused by a wrong sized rubber floor mat or driver error. But
the victims insist that the problem is not caused by floor mats but was caused by a glitch in the
electronic computer control system of the vehicle.

According to Consumer Reports, Toyota is known for its solid, efficient, and reliable
vehicles. But in the said scenario, we can see that there is something wrong with the operations
of the company. To resolve this, Toyota should focus on enhancing its operations by training
their staffs to minimize waste and to improve the quality of their vehicles. Materials used need
to be checked carefully to avoid errors and malfunctions of the product. Machinery used in
processing the products should be regularly checked or replaced with new and upgraded ones.

Toyota can use Business Process Reengineering. With this, they can recreate a business
process to improve the quality of the product and to eliminate inefficient processes that are
causing the problem. If properly executed, this may help Toyota to resolve the issue and will
regain its global competitiveness.
