ÇELEBİ  4th April 2018, 13:30 DURATION: 120 MIN
UNIVERSITY
Student Name  ID Number  Instructor Name  Department  Signature

Please read the following directions carefully.

● You must show all your work to get credit; you will not be given any points unless you
show the details of your work (this applies even if your final answer is correct).
● Write neatly and clearly; unreadable answers will not be given any credit. If you need
more writing space, use blank pages and put down the appropriate pointer marks.
● Make sure that you include units in your results. Incomplete calculations will not be
graded.
● Turn off your mobile phones, and put away. No notebooks or textbooks are allowed to
use during the exam.
● You are not allowed to leave the classroom during the first 15 minutes, and last 15
minutes.
● Calculator is allowed to use. Calculator is assumed to be used only for simple
arithmetics, other intentions will be considered as cheating. Everybody must use his/her
own calculator. Do not exchange calculators during the exam!
● There are 4 questions. Maximum pt is 100. Each question’s point value is written next to
it.
● Before you begin, please check all pages.
● At the end of the exam make sure that you turn in your exam paper to your proctor by
yourself! Do not give your exam paper to others!

QUESTIONS
(Put your solutions under each question!)

1. PART A)
A non-uniform positive line charge of length L=1.0 m is put along the x-axis as shown in
the figure, where x0=2.0
 m. The linear charge density is given by λ(x)=4x3 C/m4 .

a. (5pts) Find the total charge on the rod.

b. (5pts) Find the magnitude and direction of the total electric field, E, created by
the line charge at the origin by using integration.

3
PART B)
A proton moves at 4.50 x 105 m/s in the horizontal direction. It enters a uniform vertical
electric field with a magnitude of 9.60 x 103 N/C. Ignoring any gravitational effects, find
a. (5pts) the time interval required for the proton to travel 5.00 cm horizontally,

b. (5pts) its vertical displacement during the time interval in which it travels 5.00
cm horizontally, and

c. (5pts) the horizontal and vertical components of its velocity after it has traveled
5.00 cm horizontally.

2. PART A)
Consider a closed triangular box resting
within a horizontal electric field of
magnitude E=7.80x104 N/C as shown in
figure. Calculate the electric flux through

a. (5 pts) the inclined surface (A)

b. (5 pts) the entire surface of the

box.

PART B)
Consider a solid non-conducting sphere with a uniform charge density of ρ and a
charge of -q inside a conducting spherical shell which has a charge of -q.

a. (3 pts) Find charge density (σ) on the outer surface of the shell,
b. (12 pts) Using Gauss’ Law find the magnitudes of the electric field as a function
of radial distance r in the regions when;
i. r < R1
ii. R2 < r < R3
iii. r > R3

3. PART A)
Two particles, with charges of 20.0 nC and - 20.0 nC, are placed at the points with
coordinates (0, 4.00 cm) and (0, - 4.00 cm), as shown in the Figure. A particle with
charge 10.0 nC is located at the origin. (a) Find the electric potential energy of the
configuration of the three fixed charges. (b) A fourth particle, with a mass of 2 × 10−13 kg
and a charge of 40.0 nC, is released from rest at the point (3.00 cm, 0). Find its speed
after it has moved freely to a very large distance away.

PART B)
A nonconducting sphere has radius R = 2.31 cm and uniformly distributed charge q = +
3.50 fC. Take the electric potential at the sphere’s center to be V 0 = 0 .What is V at
radial distance (a) r = 1.45 cm and (b) r = R.

4. PART A)
A parallel plate
capacitor has the
surface area A and
the plate to plate
distance d and air
filled between the
plates (see the Figure
(a)). It has the
capacitance C0 and it
is initially charged to
q0. Then the region under the area A/4 and the area 3A/4 are filled with dielectrics K1=8
and K2=4 respectively as seen in the Figure (b).
a. Find the new capacitance in terms of C0.
b. Find the the new electrostatic energy, U, of the dielectric capacitor in terms of
U0 if U0 is the energy stored in the air filled capacitor.

PART B)
Two parallel-plate capacitors (with air between the plates) are
connected to a battery as shown in the Figure. Capacitor 1 has a plate
area of 5.0 cm2 and an electric field (between its plates) of magnitude
4000 V/m. Capacitor 2 has a plate area of 3.0 cm2 and an electric field
of magnitude 2000 V/m. What is the total charge on the two capacitors?
(Take 𝜀0=8.85x10-12 F m-1)
