Q1 Project 8vo Science Feb 2021 - FRICTION
QUIMESTER 1 PROJECT
SCIENCE
2020 - 2021
GRADE: 8 PARALLEL:
- You will be required to use the friction cube which you have already made.
- The project consists of:
- An INSTRUCTION sheet
- A GUIDANCE sheet
- A PLANNING format which includes space for your RESULTS
- A sheet on which to make your GRAPH (You may make the graph digitally)
- A final sheet on which to make your CONCLUSION and EVALUATION
- Any form of academic dishonesty will be recorded and reported, and will have the
consequences established in LOEI.
- You may seek help from your teacher but not from other students or people.
- Before submitting your work, check with the grading plan (below) that you have
completed every part of the project.

INSTRUCTIONS
You should already have made a friction cube, with 4 different surfaces. Now you will investigate and
present a piece of research, using your friction cube.
Although you may want only to investigate the first option below, there are other possibilities:
1. Investigate the different frictional forces on each of the 4 sides of the cube.
2. Investigate how the frictional forces differ on one side only, when different masses are added on to
the cube.
3. On one side only, investigate how an incline affects frictional force.
You must:
1. PLAN the investigation – using the PLANNING format
2. CONDUCT the investigation, providing foto evidence, and collect results
3. CONCLUDE the investigation with:
a. A table of results
b. A graph
c. A conclusion and justification
d. An evaluation of what you did, with recommendations for improving the investigation
GUIDANCE
PLANNING
Be specific and precise and scientific
Use units
Variables
o Independent – what is it that you, the investigator, are changing
o Dependent – your results
o Controlled – what must be maintained the same all the time to make this a FAIR TEST
Hypothesis
o simple statement – which surface do you think will produce most friction
o justification
Procedure – so that someone else could follow your instruction and get the same results
TABLE OF RESULTS
Use a ruler and make the table look good. Columns and rows – how many do you need?
Do you want to do repeats and get average results?
GRAPH
Line or Bar (or scatter)?
Full sheet of paper
Axes:
o Y axis are your results – the dependent variable
o X axis in the independent variable – what you change
o Label axes, including units
o Title
o Pencil – maybe some colour at end – or digital
CONCLUSION
Simple statement – REJECT (most probably!) or SUPPORT the hypothesis
Justification, using your data and results
EVALUATION
Identify >3 errors in your investigation which might have affected your results
Suggest a way to reduce each of these 3 errors
Make some recommendations for future investigation
WHAT AM I INVESTIGATING?
WHAT EXACTLY WILL I BE MEASURING? (What you measure will be your results)
I WILL KEEP THESE THE SAME TO MAKE THE INVESTIGATION A FAIR TEST:
1.
2.
3.
4. IS MY HYPOTHESIS:
THIS
This will happen:
Because:
THIS IS HOW I WILL CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION. (Maybe include a drawing here.)
-GRAPHING-
GRAPH YOUR RESULTS IN THE MOST APPROPRIATE WAY (You may make a digital graph if you prefer)
CONCLUSION
