I chose the book of John Mac Arthur’s “successful Christian Parenting: raising your

child with care, compassion and common sense” to do book Critique. John MacArthur is the

pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church, as well as an author, conference

speaker, chancellor emeritus of The Master's University and Seminary, and featured teacher

with the Grace to You media ministry. He has written hundreds of books and study guides,

each one thoroughly biblical and practical. Best-selling titles include The Gospel According

to Jesus, The Second Coming, and Ashamed of the Gospel, Twelve Ordinary Men, and The

MacArthur Study Bible, a 1998 ECPA Gold Medallion recipient.

The purpose of Successful Christian Parenting is to parent the principles of biblical

parenting with as much charity as possible, and help to make sense of parent’s duties before

God. John Mac Arthur convinced that if Christian parents understand and apply the simple

principles Scripture sets forth, they can rise above the trends of secular society and bring up

their children in a way that honors Christ, in any culture and under any circumstances. This

book is made up of eight chapters. In chapter one, the main title is “Shade for our Children”

and sub titles are the demise of modern society, the demise of the family, is it too late to save

the family? Where is the church in all of this? Children should be seen as a blessing, not a

hardship, parenting is supposed to be a joy, not a burden, success in parenting is measured by

what the parents do, not by what the child does, a child’s most important influences come

from parents, and not peers. In chapter two, main title understands your child’s greatest need

and the sub title are recognizing your child’s true potential, behaviorism is no answer,

isolationism is no answer, and self-esteem is no answer, the child’s greatest need,

regeneration.

In chapter three, the main title is good news for your kids and the sub titles are take

your time and be through, teach them the whole counsel of God, highlight the doctrines most

crucial to the gospel, teach your children diligently. In chapter four, the main title is teaching
your children wisdom and sub-titles are an introduction to the Wisdom of Solomon, the

personification of wisdom and vital lessons for life. In chapter five, the main title is the first

commandment with a promise and the sub-title are teaching obedience in a rebellious age,

confronting the child’s natural Bent, compensating for the child’s immaturity, helping them

grow in Wisdom in stature, and in favor with God and men, understanding obedience,

honoring the Lord in the family, discerning the attitude behind the act and profiting from the

promise.

In chapter six, the main title is ten nurture and admonition of the Lord and the sub-

title are don’t provoke them to anger, give them the right training and admonish them when

necessary. In chapter seven, the main title is the father’s role and the sub-titles are the

meaning of love, the manner of love and the motive of love and in the last chapter: the main

title is the mother’s role and the sub titles are to whom does she submit? Why does she

submit? How does she submit? And how far does she submit?
