at Brgy. I, Daet, Camarines Norte, and managed by
Mr. Renz Marion C. Suzuki.

The branch has 30 employees consists of direct hired, under agency, tenant and
vendor.

Nature of Management
LCC Supermarket exists in a competitive environment, where it acts as a
value-added intermediary between supplier companies and the scattered individual
customers who eventually buy their products.

In carrying out its function, they acquire and assemble a wide assortment of
goods from individual suppliers, then organizes and distributes them as-needed to a
chain of retail stores for sale to local customers.

According to Mr. Suzuki, one of the natures of the management of the

company is being a goal oriented, the company is aiming to become the leading
supermarket in Bicol, by providing a customer service satisfaction while earning a
decent amount of profit and providing income for their employees.

Organizational Environment
Organizational environment are forces or institutions surrounding an
organization that affect performance, operations and resources.

LCC Supermarket has experienced various challenges from the time of its
establishment to the current period. There has been a lot of competition s in the
market, which has significantly affected its market share. Here in Daet their primary
competitors are SM Hypermarket, Houseware Plaza, Gemaglenn and Sanitary.

The manager emphasize that one of their biggest problems is the existence of
many competitors it definitely affects the operation of the business. It affects both the
prices and market share which have impacts on the profitability of the business. But

he stated that they are finding ways in order to survive these challenges and one of
their solution is to find a potent and reliable supplier. For instance, if you are looking
for a fresh chicken he guarantees that they offer the lowest price in the market
ranging from P100 to P120 per kilo.

Organizational Culture
When it comes to the culture that they employ they put emphasis on
teamwork and core values that emphasize employee satisfaction and happiness, in
addition to a commitment to sell the highest quality products available. He implies
that at LCC they follow several principles such as building a foundation of shared
values and beliefs, and explain to the employees the vision of company’s future
which is “To be the most preferred everyday supermarket providing
convenience, assortment of quality products that are reasonably priced, and delightful
customer servicing in communities where we operate”.

How do they plan?

Overall Management

The overall plans of the company were designed by the top management and
are being applied for all branches. The top management is responsible for all plans
on designing, marketing, procurement, and improving all aspects.

In-store Management

The store manager shares that one of the key techniques when it comes to
planning for the daily operation is the input he gets from the others. At first being
tasked to be the store manager of the LCC Express Mart is a struggle in terms of
performing the daily routine but as the time goes by with the help of the other
managers at the different branches sharing their expertise to him as well as the
feedback he gets to their customers slowly but surely he gets the job well done.

Another is the creation of maintaining daily task schedule. The task schedule should
include routine activities, such as opening and closing the store, and activities
required to stay compliant with quality standards or regulation.

How do they manage information?

Information is the lifeblood of the business. It helps dictate how business

forms strategies and implement processes based on them.

According to Mr. Suzuki, if there are new policies, guidelines, and memos
coming from the main office, the manager immediately called a meeting to discuss
and explain all the important information. For branch communication, the manager
established a group chat for faster dissemination of information.

Manner of Decision Making

In a business like a supermarket decision making is a critical part of the job,

actions must be acted upon quickly. The operations of LCC in terms of decision
making, most of the decisions are coming from the top management like in pricing
and promos. However, some decisions that are managerial or in his level.

According to Mr. Suzuki, making the right decision rapidly without mistake is
impossible you will encounter one mistake that will make you more competent as a
leader because it will serve as a humble experience. He also emphasizes that he is
a risk-taker the typical manner of decision making is having a call to the main office
when there are difficult decisions to be done but sometimes you need to decide on
your own.

How do they administer control over the organization?

In terms of control, the decision-making powers are retained in the Main
Office. The higher management is the one who makes critical decisions like hiring
and recruitment of new employees, administering suggested retail price of goods
and commodities as well as the promotion of rank and files.

As a store manager, he handles customer complaints as well as employees

grievance. He oversees the operations of the branch and reports it to higher
management regularly. The local branch has two departments that help in the
operation, the Inventory Department who assess the stocks they need to be ordered
and how much to be ordered, and the Finance Department who handles the daily
collections and operational expenses of the store.

What are the existing organizational strategies?

The store focuses on product strategies like product outsourcing that are
unique and different from other local competitors. The manager explained that they
study the demand of customers. He cited an example of rice being sold in their store.
He said that instead of selling a sack of rice, they decided to sell them in smaller
quantities so other customers can afford it. The store is also thinking of expanding
the meat section with the availability of vegetables and fruits so customers can avail
of a one- stop kind of market shop.

When it comes to employee’s morale, they motivate them by giving

incentives. The manager recommends those who are qualified especially when they
hit the target.

In terms of management strategies, they implemented supply chain practices

that are equally weighted components: technology adoption and decision sharing.
Based on the interview with the manager, their technology component measures
their adoption of eight store level technologies related to supply chain management:

(1) electronic data interchange (EDI), (2) electronic-assisted receiving, (3)
scan-based trading, (4) computer- assisted ordering, (5) electronic shelf tags, (6)
product movement analysis, (7) plan-o-grams for shelf space allocation and (8)
loyalty card programs. The first four are associated with the technologies and
business practices that link to their suppliers. The second four are associated with
the product selection, promotions, and merchandising.

Innovation and Change

“Innovation is a must and a change for everyone”, this is what Mr. Suzuki told
the researchers. He said that innovation is important for the sustainability and
economic growth of the business. They need to cope up with the trend of modern
technologies to survive the tight competition. In this critical time of Pandemic, they’re
thinking of reaching out to their customers through safety measures and proper
health protocols. He cited several possible changes and ongoing changes in their
store, to wit:
1. Remittance Center- They are planning of putting up a foreign exchange outlet so
clients can exchange their currencies in return can be used in grocery shopping.
2. Online Supermarket- they started introducing the mobile application called
Community Mart where customers can purchase online and deliver goods at the
convenience of their homes.

How do they manage their teams?

Mr. Suzuki describes himself as a jolly leader who always helps his co-
workers and motivate them to achieve their full potential, He said that supervising a
supermarket is not an easy task. You serve the store for more than 8 hours and
there are instances where you have to face difficult customers where your patience
will be tested.
The importance of feedback plays a vital role in making the store successful.
The most effective way of developing your team is to ensure that there is regular

feedback. He was quoted saying during the interview that “Marami sa atin ang
takot sa feedback dahil iniisip natin na eto ay negatibo” but feedbacks especially
constructive ones boost productivity. He also adds that if you give and receive
feedback regularly, everyone’s performance will improve.

How do they motivate people?

A manager has many duties, you do not only set as a model but also inspire
them. One of the most important traits that a manager must have is to know how to
motivate and inspire employees. Motivated staff will always perform at his best and
be maximally productive. According to Mr. Suzuki, he regularly praises employee
who performs well in his job because he knows that it will boost one’s morale and
confidence. The most important thing he said about motivation is the value of
RESPECT. He believes that for a business to have a high performance, trust and
respect are essential. He practices transparency so staff can be more opened to him
and works efficiently, hence earns his trust.

Leadership style

Being the leader of the band he balances employee-employer relationships

with task-direction. He believes that employees can become more effective and
efficient if they feel that you care for them. He practices “nonpartisan” so
employees can feel his authority and gain the respect he deserves. He listens to
both parties when conflict arises. He emphasize the importance of maintaining
performance expectation so that employees will not be complacent and work
effectively

The leadership style of the store manager is a balance of being an autocratic and a
democratic leader.
