Unit syllabus: CONCEPT OF MEASUREMENT


General concept – Generalized measurement system-Units and standards-measuring instruments- sensitivity, stability,
range of accuracy, precision-static and dynamic response-repeatability-systematic and random errors-correction,
calibration, Introduction to Dimensional and Geometric Toleranceing, interchangeability.

Objective: After completing this unit each and every student would have acquired the knowledge
about the fundamentals of General Measurement system & Errors in Measurement.

Unit syllabus: LINEAR AND ANGULAR MEASUREMENT
Definition of metrology-Linear measuring instruments: Vernier, micrometer,Slip gauges and classification, Tool Makers
Microscope, interferometery, optical flats, limit gauges- Comparators: Mechanical, pneumatic and electrical types,
applications.
Angular measurements: -Sine bar, Sine Center, bevel protractor, angle Decker.

Objective: After completing this unit each and every student would have acquired the knowledge
about the fundamentals of Linear and Angular Measurements and various devices used for
measuring the different parameters.

Measurement of screw threads-Thread gauges, floating carriage micrometer-measurement of gears-tooth thickness-
constant chord and base tangent method-Gleason gear testing machine – radius measurements-surface finish,
straightness, flatness and roundness measurements.

Objective: After completing this unit students would have acquired the knowledge about the
following topics- screw thread terminology, errors in threads, measurement of various elements of
thread, Gear & their types, gear terminology, measurement of various elements of gears.

Precision instruments based on laser-Principles- laser interferometer-application in linear, angular measurements and
machine tool metrology
Coordinate measuring machine (CMM)- need, Constructional features – types, applications – computer aided inspection.

Objective: Students will gain knowledge on various devices and instruments available to measure
the Pressure and various characteristics of flow of fluid.
