*Describe the flow of fluids from a Orifice (Torricelli’s Theorem)
Let h be the depth of centerline of orifice below the free surface of liquid in the rank shown in
figure 6.25. Consider two points 1 and 2; 1 at the free liquid surface and 2 at the vena contracta
as shown in the figure. With usual notations, the Bernoulli’s equation when applied between 1
and 2, we get,
6.64
In Eq. (6.64). losses between 1 and 2 are neglected. The elevation at section 1 is z1 = z2 + h. at
the free surface, and at the jet region, the pressure is atmospheric pressure and hence in gauge
units, it is zero (i.e., p1=p2=pa=0) Also, if the cross-sectional area of the tank is large, the
velocity of particles at the free surface is practically sero (i.e., V1=0). Incorporating the above
factors, the Bernoulli’s equation between 1 and 2 becomes:
6.65
Equation (6.65) for velocity of flow aat the vena contracta of the orifice is called Torricelli’s
theorem for orifice.
