INTRODUCTION
GOOGLE

Google is an American multinational technology company that specializes

internet related services and products, which include online advertising
technologies, a search engine, cloud computing, software and hardware. It is
considered one of the big five technology companies in the U.S. information
technology industry, alongside Amazon, facebook, Apple, and Microsoft.

GOOGLE ATAP
Google Advanced Technology and Projects group(ATAP) is a skunkworks team
and in-house technology incubator, created by former DARPA director Regina
Dugan. ATAP is similar to X, but works on projects, granting project leaders time
previously only two years in which to move a project from concept to proven
product. According to Dugan, the ideal ATAP project combines technology and
science, requires a certain amount of novel research, and creates a marketable
product. Historically, the ATAP team was born at Motorola and kept when
Google sold Motorola to Lenovo, for this reason, ATAP ideas have tended to
involve mobile hardware technology.

PROJECT SOLI

Project Soli is a miniature radar that understands human motion at various scales,
from the tap of your finger to the movements of your body. This novel approach
which uses small, high speed sensors and data-analysis techniques such as
Dopplers, can detect fine motions with sub-millimeter accuracy. Thus for
instance, Project Soli technology enables a user to issue commands to a computer
by rubbing a thumb and forefinger together in pre-defined patterns. Applications
might include sensors embedded in clothing, switches that don’t require physical
contact, and accessibility technology.

This is the technology GOOGLE ATAP is working on Soli Chip:-

SOLI CHIP

The soli chip is small in size of a 5*5 mm. It has a sensor which capture sub
millimeters of motions of fingers in 3D space. It capture motions of fingers at a
phenomenal rate of 10,000 frames per second. It also uses machine learning to
translate movements to pre-programmed commands. However team is working
for this technology to be installed in computers, smartphones, wearable devices
and for the purpose of gaming.
HOW IT WORKS

❖ EMITS-

Soli radar emits electromagnetic waves in a broad beam. Objects such as a

human hand, within the beam scatter this energy, reflecting some portion
back towards the radar antenna.
❖ REFLECTS- Properties of the reflected signal, such as energy, time delay,
and frequency shift capture rich information about the object’s
characteristics and behavior’s, including size, shape, orientation, material,
distance and velocity.
❖ RECOGNIZES- By processing the temporal signal variations and other
captured characteristics of the signal, soli can distinguish between complex
movements to understand the size, shape, orientation, material, distance
and velocity of the object within its field.
❖ VERSATILE- Soli chip is smaller and draw less power. They had
developed and evaluated chip designs based on two modulation
arichitectures : a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar
and a Direct – sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) radar. Both chips
integrate the entire radar system into a small package, including multiple
beam forming antennas that enable 3D tracking and imaging. And, unlike
traditional radars, soli has no hardware components.
❖ CUSTOM PIPLINES- Soli interaction pipeline implements algorithmic
stages of increasing data abstraction from raw radar signal to application-
specific gesture labels. This pipeline uses several stages of signal
abstraction: from raw radar data to signal transformations, a custom – built
machine learning training infrastructure for abstracting features, detection
and tracking, gesture probabilities, and finally, UI tools to interpret gesture
controls. This sensing paradigm is efficient for on device bandwith
constraint systems and does not require high spatial resolution. In fact,
spatial resolution is coarser than the scale of most finger gestures. Instead,
Soli’s fundamental sensing paradigm relies on resolving motion by
extracting subtle changes in the received radar signal over time. By
processing these temporal signal variations, Soli can identify and recognize
complex movements within its field. Lightweight and hardware agnostic,
interaction pipline allows to use the same algorithms and software on
different types od radar. Its efficient implementation enables touchless
gesture interaction on low power and cost effective embedded platforms
used in wearable, mobile and IOT applications.
IMPORTANCE OF SOLI CHIP

1. THE LANGUAGE OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

Soli aims to understand the nuances of human movements so that person can use
natural body language and gestures as a form of input. They created an interaction
framework that groups human movements according to levels of proximity and
engagement between the user and soli:like soli is aware of person presence, soli
also anticipates when person want to interact and soli is very active in recognizing
and responding to the person gestures. The framework is based on regular human
nonverbal communication models.

2. SOLI MOVEMENT LIBRARY

Soli movement library consists of units of interaction which can be used to

build complex interaction which can be used to build complex interactive
experiences that go beyond touch and voice. It is aware of the location of the
people in its sensing area, however soli recognizes the body cues that typically
start and end interactions, just like when a person recognize when someone
establish a eye content with the person, whereas soli responds to articulate
both hand and body gestures both micro and macro like when someone use to
perform specific tasks, such as selecting manipulating and navigating content.
MAJOR APPLICATIONS OF PROJECT SOLI

❖ MEDICAL

❖ GAMING

❖ GADGETS

❖ SMART WATCHES

❖ SMARTPHONES
CHALLENGES FOR IMPLEMENTATIONS

❖ It has a very small radar range

❖ Multiple gestures could not be possible
❖ Highly Expensive
❖ Security threat
❖ Another challenge with wearable devices right now is inputs
❖ There’s no simple way to control these devices.
