Customised performance – up to three modes on each bus and coach

Up to three performance modes can be specified on vehicles with Scania
Opticruise. Several other parameters can be set individually according to
customer needs and all settings can be altered by a Scania workshop if
required.

• Standard mode is an all-round mode optimised to provide good fuel

economy, while still delivering good hill performance. The system strives
to run the engine at maximum torque during hillclimbing. Cruise control
has normal functionality on buses and coaches.

• Economy mode is tuned to consume as little fuel as possible at some

sacrifice in trip time. Engine response is soft (with Euro 5/EEV EGR,
Euro 6 engines).

Alternative speed limiter settings of 4 or 9 km/h lower speed can be

chosen, which engage automatically when switching to Economy mode.
Kickdown is disabled.

Cruise control works with fuel-efficient strategy, named Scania

Ecocruise. Scania Active Prediction can be specified for further fuel
savings. Scania Active Prediction uses GPS positioning and
topographical map to optimize speed going uphill and downhill, saving
fuel in hilly terrain.

• Power mode is intended for runs where transport time is at a premium.

Engine response is aggressive (Euro 5/EEV EGR, Euro 6 engines) and
uphill performance optimised by running the engine at maximum power,
with slightly quicker gearchanges than in Standard mode. Cruise control
has normal functionality.

A fourth mode ‘Off-road’ is available for trucks only, not on buses.

Scania Opticruise functionality

When introduced in 1996, Scania Opticruise was one of the first automated
gearchanging systems in the market and it took driver comfort and driver
support to new levels. The functionality has been continually refined ever since,
turning Scania Opticruise into a comprehensive powertrain management
system.

Buses and coaches have always the fully automated version of Scania
Opticruise. The automatic clutch is electro-hydraulically operated, providing
exceptional precision and smoothness.

All gearchanging controls are integrated in the RH steering wheel lever, which
also controls the Scania Retarder (if fitted).

All driving modes are controlled by toggling the ring switch on the Opticruise
lever and the mode engaged is indicated in the central instrument.

N Neutral
R Reverse
Display examples m Manoeuvring

Automatic Manual
A Standard mode M Standard mode
AE Economy mode ME Economy mode
AP Power mode MP Power mode

Ring switch Used to select Neutral, Drive or Reverse. The spring-back toggle
function switches between performance modes and the modes
available are indicated in the central instrument.
Lever Used to adjust gearchanges manually. Also controls progressive
braking with the retarder, if fitted.
A/M switch Switches between automatic and manual gearchanging.
AUT switch In AUT position, the retarder, exhaust brake and downchanging
are used to optimize retardation when the brake pedal is slightly
depressed. The application delay is bridged by brake blending.
Manoeuvring Engaged by pressing the Opticruise lever away from the steering
wheel for a few seconds. Provides ultra-smooth driving in all
gears (including crawlers) and all modes. Shown with an ‘m’ after
the gear indication. Disengages automatically in high gear range.
Rocking Enabled automatically if drive wheels are spinning faster than
front wheels.
Function: The clutch disengages immediately when the
accelerator is released. The driver can press the accelerator
repeatedly to get the vehicle ‘rocking’ and get moving again.

Hill-hold Hill-hold makes starting uphill simply a matter of accelerating

away. Activate the hill-hold switch, brake, start accelerating
within 3 seconds after releasing the brake. Hill-hold function is
standard on buses and coaches with Opticruise.
Launch control Normal starts are made by slipping in the automatic clutch
slightly above idling speed. For tough starts, for example on
steep hills, or on very soft ground, the driver can trigger higher
starting revs by pushing down the accelerator fully. The clutch
will then slip in at around 1,000 revs.
Quick Preselecting D or R with the rotary switch before stopping
forward/reverse provides immediate engagement when the vehicle stops. Useful
for repetitive manoeuvres in D and R.
Multi-down Changing down manually several steps (no limitation) before
entering a steep hill leaves the engine revving and the gearbox
in neutral. The gear engages as soon as the speed is right and
the vehicle starts climbing at maximum power. If you know from
experience, for example, that the vehicle will climb in fourth gear,
you can change to fourth beforehand and just wait for the climb
to start.

It is possible to toggle between the performance modes during driving as well

as in stationary vehicle. When shutting off the engine actual performance mode
is stored in memory and when engine is started again the same mode is used.

Cruise control
Cruise control characteristics differ depending on performance mode. In
Economy mode cruise control works with more fuel-efficient strategy allowing a
wider speed range.

The normal cruise control strives to maintain speed up the hill using the
maximum torque band of the engine. The normal cruise control is used in the
performance modes Standard and Power.

In Economy mode the cruise control works with fuel-efficient strategy, named
Scania Ecocruise. Scania Ecocruise adapts the cruising speed to the
topography by sensing the load on the engine, saving around 0.2% fuel in hilly
terrain. Scania Ecocruise is only active in Economy mode.

Scania cruise control with Active Prediction is a new option for further fuel
savings. Scania Active Prediction uses GPS positioning and topographical map
data to optimise speed going uphill and downhill, saving fuel in hilly terrain.
Scania Active Prediction uses a special, extra fuel-efficient strategy with Scania
Opticruise in Economy mode saving 0.6% of fuel in hilly terrain.

See Marketing news no. 13003 ‘Scania Active Prediction’ for more information
about the predictive cruise control system.

Manual gear change limitation

A new feature introduced on Scania Opticruise is Manual gear change
limitation, which blocks the possibility to make manual gear changes above 50
km/h. Only to be specified together with Economy and/or Standard mode. The
parameter setting can be altered by a Scania workshop if required.

If the owner desires to limit driver influence on gear selection this function can
be chosen. This might be useful for vehicles in long distance operation where
drivers need assistance to drive more fuel efficient.

Note: There are operations for which the manual gear change limitation is not
recommended. For example when driving on snowy or slippery roads uphill, the
driver may need to lock the gears to prevent automatic gear changes, which
can lead to unwanted stops.

Economy mode speed reduction

Speed limit reduction is another feature with possibility to reduce top speed
when entering Economy mode. Alternative speed limiter settings of 4 or 9 km/h
lower top speed can be chosen, which engage automatically when switching to
Economy mode. The parameter setting can be altered by a Scania workshop if
required.

Lower speed saves fuel. Economy mode in combination with 4 km/h lower
speed can save up to 5% fuel in long distance operation.

Fuel savings
Following examples indicate potential fuel savings for a long distance coach
with GTW 20 tonnes.

Economy mode vs. Standard mode Fuel saving

Economy mode Standard mode 0.6%
CC with active prediction Normal CC
Hilly road Hilly road
Economy mode Standard mode 0.2%
Ecocruise (without active prediction) Normal CC
Hilly road Hilly road
Economy mode Standard mode No fuel saving
Flat road Flat road

The heavier the vehicle is and the more undulating the landscape is, the greater
the fuel benefit with Economy mode and Scania active prediction will be.

Lower speed saves fuel.

Recommendation
See the Technical recommendation no. 13007 ‘Performance modes’ available
on PIH (Product Information Homepage), see under
Recommendations/Technical recommendations/Documents.

It is recommended not to specify more performance modes than necessary.

Consider it should be easy for the driver to use the vehicle.

Use VO (Vehicle Optimizer) in order to compare different powertrains with

regard to fuel economy and performance before the final selection is made for
total gear ratio. In VO it is also possible to compare how the different
performance modes affect the vehicle characteristics.

The available performance modes in the vehicle can be altered by the

authorized Scania workshop. The workshop can also modify settings for the
functions Manual gear change limitation and Economy mode speed reduction.
