GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2
1. Interpret the phase diagram of water and carbon dioxide.
The phase diagram of water shows that the slope of the line between the
solid and liquid states is negative rather than positive which means that
the melting point of ice decreases as the external pressure increases. The
water’s substance wherein its solid state is less dense than the liquid
state. While the phase diagram of a carbon dioxide (CO2), has a more
typical melting curve, sloping up and to the right. The triple point is
−56.6°C and 5.11 atm, which means that liquid CO2 cannot exist at
pressures that are less than 5.11 atm.

2. Determine and explain the heating and cooling curve of a

substance.
Heating curves show how the temperature changes as a substance is
heated up. As heat is steadily added to the ice block, the water molecules
will begin to vibrate faster and faster as they absorb kinetic energy.
Cooling curve is the opposite. It is a graph of the variation of the
temperature with time as it is allowed to cool. They have horizontal flat
parts where the state changes from gas to liquid, or from liquid to solid.
These are mirror images of the heating curve.
