Question

Can a type certificate for a Rotor-Nacelle Assembly (RNA) be issued based on IECRE OD-
501?

Rationale
OD-501 specifies that a type certificate covers a wind turbine type including the tower. In
practice, the tower is for many projects a site specific design, and therefore the possibility
to issue a type certificate for the RNA is desired by OEMs instead of a component
certificate for the RNA.
Proposal (if any)
Add to the list in chapter 6.1 of which certificates can conclude the certification process:
- a type Certificate RNA

With the following definition:

A type certificate RNA covers the same scope as a wind turbine type certificate, including
the tower top flange, but excluding the structural design of the tower below the tower top
flange.

All relevant procedures and requirements listed in this document (OD-501) for a type
certificate also apply for a type certificate RNA, including (but not limited to) regulation for
validity, maintenance, expiration and renewal, as well as the requirement for type testing.
The tower and foundation shall be sufficiently documented to enable type testing and load
calculations for the complete wind turbine. The load measurements and load validation
shall also cover tower loads.

Note: The interface for the type certificate RNA shall be specified in the annex of the
certificate to enable a possible integration of a type certificate RNA and a tower component
certificate to form a regular type certificate.
