Jurie Mae Balandaca - Verse Analysis of Rizal's Poem " My Last Farewell."
by Jose Rizal
Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda who commonly known as Jose Rizal our
national hero is a very brave and carefree person who expresses his thoughts and feelings
through writing novels and poems such as Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, My Last Farewell
and many more. He is a brilliant medical student and became a physician. He fought for our
independence through writing unlike any other heroes who fight using weapons and sacrifices
their lives in war. He wrote those novels to expose the evil deeds of Spaniards who colonized us
for over 333 years. He kept on traveling many countries and became a member of La
Solidaridad and also he founded the La Liga Filipina.
In the verse I choose, I think that Rizal asked prayers for his/our motherland for he
remembers all the sacrifices done just to have the freedom we always wanted. The martyrs who
suffered the same fate as to him. All the mothers, wives and children who are left behind
because they are abandoned by their loved one who fight for the freedom we have now and all
the lives that have taken to gain the independence they seek. I feel unhappy reading and
understanding this verse because even in his last will, he still thinks for his fellow countrymen.
He still cares for the people of what will happen to the families left behind even if he knows that
some Filipinos are helping Spaniards to execute him. He always did all the best he can that
Filipinos can benefit. In this line, "And then for thyself that redemption thou mayst gain" this
indicates great love for his fellow countrymen that even his death didn't matter but the justice for
his fellow countrymen is all he wanted. I pity him because in times of his death no one has their
to console him even his family and his wife. All he was thinking for the Filipinos and he never
regrets doing all the best he can do just to give independence to his country.
The manner of such undeniable cruelty that Rizal has seen from the colonizers, the
inevitable life decisions he had to make, the life-changing events he had to experience, the
life-threatening actions he had to commit and the great expeditions he travelled to are for the
amendment of his home country is such a great example of bravery and nationalism. True, Jose
Rizal was an exemplary figure to the extent that his influence was great and he uses his
intelligence in fighting for freedom and because making use of swords and guns was never
right. Making justifiable arguments and righteous doings are the aim for a better change rather
than going on a bloody bath. Jose Rizal's great contribution and life lesson experiences are a
strong affirmation that he's a figure worth emulating for. And in the future generations they will
always remember that Rizal's life is a very valuable happening that we shouldn't forget.
