Asking questions is one of the primary ways of collecting data. But as author
Edward Hodnett noted, “If you do not ask the right questions, you don’t get the right
answers. A question asked in the right way often points to its own answer. Asking
questions is the A-B-C of diagnosis. Only the inquiring mind solves problems.” It seems
simple enough, but it does not always as easy as it seems. There is an art to asking good
questions.
By defining exactly what the researcher is trying to find out, these questions
influence most of the rest of the steps taken to conduct the research. That is true even if
the research is not for academic purposes but for other areas of our lives.
For instance, if you are seeking information about a health problem to learn
whether you have anything to worry about, research questions will make it possible for
you to more effectively decide whether to seek medical help–and how quickly.
If you are researching a potential employer, having developed, and used research
questions will mean you are able to more confidently decide whether to apply for an
internship or job there.
The confidence you will have when making such decisions will come from knowing
that the information, they are based on was gathered by conscious thought rather than
serendipity and whim.
In the Measure phase of the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze,
Improve, Control) improvement methodology, data is collected and analyzed to provide a
performance baseline for the process under study. Asking questions is one of the primary
