4.5 "Warm" as used in this specification refers to piping areas outside of the cold box structures
or other enclosures. A "warm" area may still have cryogenic piping in it.

4.6 Field supported line: A pipe for which the contractor is responsible for the location, the
design, the supply, and the installation of the pipe supports. See Figures 1 and 2 for
suggested support details.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES

5.1 Contractor: It is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure that the installed site pipe
supports are suitable for the specified purpose as indicated on the isometric, and that the
supports are installed in accordance with this specification. Any additional foundations required
for site pipe supports are the responsibility of the contractor.

5.2 Air Products stress engineer or pipe support/piping designer: It is the responsibility
of the Air Products stress engineer or pipe support/piping designer to define the site support
type required (e.g., rest, anchor, guide) and its approximate location for individually tagged
site pipe supports.

5.3 The Air Products Representative has the right of final approval of the installation of the site
pipe supports and the field-supported lines.

6. GENERAL

6.1 Common Supports

6.1.1 Whenever possible, the contractor shall ensure that supports on adjacent lines located close
together are combined in a single support structure in order to minimize the space, additional
foundations, and material requirements. However, unnecessarily complex structures should be
avoided.

6.2 Bolts

6.2.1 Stainless steel bolts shall be used for stainless steel pipe supports. Carbon steel bolts shall be
used for carbon steel pipe supports (see paragraph 6.4).

6.2.2 All bolts shall be fixed at standard back marks (i.e., located on standard gage lines).

6.2.3 Field-installed mechanical anchors used for fixing baseplates to concrete shall be expansion-
type bolts or Resin Anchors suitable for the application.

6.3 U-bolts

6.3.1 U-bolts and pipe saddles/straps shall be to an approved dimensional standard to suit the pipe.

6.3.2 Stainless steel U-bolts shall be used on stainless steel pipe and aluminum pipe.

6.3.3 Carbon steel U-bolts shall be used on uninsulated carbon steel pipe.

6.3.4 When used for anchoring, two nuts shall be used on the same side of the beam flange, on
each leg of the U-bolt (i.e., four nuts per U-bolt—one serving as a locknut on each leg) per
reference Air Products Drawing 311708A-C015.

6.3.5 When used as a guide, there shall be a 2 mm (1/16 in) gap between the U-bolt and pipe all
around the pipe. Two nuts shall be used on each leg of the U-bolt (i.e., four nuts per U-bolt—
one on either side of the beam flange) per reference Air Products Drawing 311708A-C016.

6.3.6 U-bolt guides shall not be used on lines DN40 (NPS 1 1/2) and smaller. A saddle/strap guide
shall be selected per reference AP Drawing 311708A-C016, Detail C016A.

6.4 Material Compatibility

6.4.1 When supporting aluminum or stainless steel piping, the pipe support member in contact with
the pipe shall be stainless steel. However for posts taller than 500 mm or 18 inches, only the
top member needs to be stainless steel.

6.5 Structure

6.5.1 Where available and at the discretion of the contractor (at no additional cost to Air
Products), the use of pre-engineered support systems, such as Unistrut™, may be
substituted for the structural members specified in Figure 1 with the restrictions contained
in paragraphs 6.5.1.1 and 6.5.1.2.

6.5.1.1 Unistrut™ P1000 or stronger channels may be substituted for angles. Material (carbon steel
or stainless steel) shall be determined per paragraph 6.4.

6.5.1.2 Unistrut™ pipe/conduit supports may be substituted for the U-bolts and hangers specified in
Figure 1. Clamps shall not be used where a guide is specified. A guide support shall
and must allow for expansion and contraction of the pipe along the length of the pipe.

6.5.2 Structural steel used for supporting piping shall be selected and sized so that the resulting
support is stable and effective. To ensure stability, maximum deflection of the completed
support due to the piping load shall be limited to 3 mm (1/8"). Tall posts or other long
structural members shall not be excessively flexible and prone to vibration in response to
external influences such as wind or handling by people.

6.6 Supporting Insulated Lines

6.6.1 Table 2 describes the type of support that shall be used for the various insulation types.

6.6.2 Figures 2 and 3 depict suitable support details for insulated pipe. For a suitable anchor on
insulated pipe, refer to Table 2, Note 1.

7. FIELD-SUPPORTED LINES

7.1 Field-supported lines are marked as such on the isometric drawings.

7.1.1 The contractor shall locate the supports and determine the type of support at each location
to satisfy the requirements of paragraph 7.2 and Table 1.

7.1.2 If an individual support is tagged by Air Products on a piping isometric marked for field
supporting, this support shall be installed at the specified location in accordance with the
specified drawing. Additional field support shall then be added to satisfy the requirements of
paragraph 7.2 and Table 1.

7.2 Field-supported lines shall be adequately supported for weight, wind and seismic loads in
accordance with paragraphs 7.2.1 and 7.2.2. Supports shall allow for thermal expansion and
contraction of the piping due to operating and ambient temperature changes.

7.2.1 Weight-bearing supports shall be located near concentrated weights such as valves and
flanges.

7.2.2 On long runs of piping, the piping will be considered adequately supported for wind and
seismic loads if the supports along the pipe alternate between "rest," then "guide," then
"rest," etc., using the support spacing of Table 1.

7.3 The quantity of supports for field-supported lines as listed on the Air Products prepared Pipe
Support Index is for planning purposes only. The contractor has the final responsibility for the
required quantity of supports. (Note: The supports are tagged as "SSWFS" for each
field-supported line on the Pipe Support Index; the pipe diameter is given in the "A DIM."
column; and the estimated quantity is in the "Qty" column.)

Table 2 Notes:

1. Wrapper Plate: Refer to Figure 3 for details. Refer to Figure 2 for other support details.
Anchors for Insulated Pipe:
An acceptable anchor support can be fabricated by attaching a stainless steel support to the
pipe using a tight, stainless steel U-bolt. The insulation shall be vapor sealed around the
support penetration. For Cold and Cryogenic insulation (C, D, N, P, and R) the insulation shall
be extended around the support member to a distance equal to three times the thickness of
the insulation on the pipe (measured from the OD of the pipe).
2. For insulation breaks, insulation shall be cut back to allow for piping movements up to
+/- 80 mm (3 in). Pipe supports shall be attached directly to the pipe. All insulation breaks
shall be sealed against the ingress of water. On piping with calcium silicate insulation, piping
exposed in accessible locations shall have a firmly fixed square or hexagonal mesh covering for
personnel protection. This is not necessary in locations where personnel contact would normally
be difficult.
3. The Insulation Designator consists of a single letter (the "Insulation System" material code)
and a single number (the "Function" number). The Insulation Designator is found both on the
P&ID on the pipe in the diagram and on the Piping Isometric in the title block as the "Insulation
Type." For example, P1=80 is the "P" insulation system with function number "1" and a
nominal thickness of 80 mm.
