0 Holistic Approach

Standard Curriculum for Primary School (KSSR), a new curriculum for

primary school, was launched in year 2011 and at the same time, Lembaga
Peperiksaan Malaysia (LPM) established a new format of assessment which was
School-Based Assessment (SBA) or Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS)
(Ministry of Education, 2012). SBA is considered as holistic approach as it comprises
of academic and non- academic performance. SBA gives the opportunity to the
educators to implement formative and summative assessment which based on
school. School-Based Assessment (SBA) can provide the entire information about
the knowledge and skills achieved by the students.

Besides, School Based Assessment (SBA) can measure the potential and
achievement of students holistically through their intellectual, emotion, spiritual and
physical aspects (Ahmad & Warti, 2014). Furthermore, SBA consists of school
assessment, central assessment, psychometric assessment as well as physical,
sports, and co-curricular activities assessment. These types of assessments cover all
the abilities of the students from academic to their motor skills.

2.0 Centralized Assessment

The frequently used methods for centralized assessment are test, practical
test, project, teamwork, observation and other. Later, student will be given grade
which reflects the outcome of learning and teacher makes judgment on students’
performance. Hence, both educators and students are working towards this type of
assessment. Some of the students have a better proficiency in completing a task
such as a project compared to answering a test. Hence, this centralized assessment
will give a precious chance to the students to show their all potentials in completing
the task which educator is given responsibility to judge and give feedback.

Other than that, school-based assessment also increases the reliability of

assessment where multiple type of assessment can be used rather than depends on
only one examination as well as to provide more reliable evidences or picture of
students’ abilities. For instance, teachers can use project or portfolio as one type of
the formative assessment which requires self and peer feedback. This can help
students to improve and know their level of understanding based on certain
subtopics.
