1 Title: Design of scraper as an attachment on wheel arc panel of a sugar cane truck for removal
of large chunks of mud on truck wheels

1.2. Background of the Study

A scraper is a tool or device use for scraping, especially for removing dirt, paint, ice or other
unwanted matter from a surface(Oxford Languages and Google - English | Oxford Languages, n.d.). In
early as 1906 an invention was patented that relates particularly to improvements in dirt-scrapers-
for road and field work. The invention will provide a scraper of simple and novel construction and
operating to thoroughly harrow or break up the dirt of the road or field and then smooth the
same(Harter, 1906). Another invention patented on April 8, 1941 in which the objective of the
invention is to provide a razor blade holder which may easily and rapidly adjusted to adapt a blade
for performing scraping or cutting operations(Bodkin, 1942).

While a significant amount of time has passed after this inventions have been patented no
study have been found on how to scrape off big chunks of mud on truck wheels. To elaborate this
issue, sugarcane industry is one of the main source of income in Negros Island, Philippines. It is a
very common problem for motorists in rural highways and roads to encounter big chunks of mud
and dirt especially during the harvest period from October to May .These big chunks of mud is
caused by sugarcane trucks. The trucks came from sugarcane plantations and the mud from the
plantation gets caught up on the truck tires and by the time the trucks get on the concrete road the
big chunks of mud and dirt gets dumped on the road. This big chunk of mud becomes an
obstruction on the road and at the very least causes inconvenience to the flow of traffic. This study
will focus on the use of scraper in order to scrape off or reduce big chunks of mud.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to design a scraper attachment on the wheel arc panel of the
truck that will reduce big chunks of mud in the road.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following:

1. To calculate the stresses involved in the design in order for the scraping attachment to
withstand the stress brought up by the mud. The scraping attachment is stationary and it will be
designed in such a way where the large chunks of mud are scraped off while the wheel is rotating.

2. To determine the materials to be used in the design.

3. To determine the cost of materials to be used if ever fabrication is possible.

4. To determine the effectiveness of the design in scraping off the large chunks of mud on
the truck wheels while the truck is still travelling the muddy road.
1.4 Methodology

In this study the scraper will be used as an attachment for the purpose of scraping the
unwanted chunks of mud off the wheel.

Determination of measurements of the scraper

The length of the scraper would be basically based on the tire width which ranges from
more or less than 295mm to 315mm.While the thickness of the scraper will be based on stress
calculation.

Determination of the materials to be used

The tip of the scraper should be softer so that it will not damage the tire if ever the tire
bumps or collides on the wheel. Considering this instance the design might need hard rubber or
ebonite which may contain 25 to 80 percent sulfur and linseed oil. The scraper itself with the
exemption of the tip will be made of metal.

Determination of springs to use as shock absorbers

The scraper will be attached to a compression spring as shock absorber to prevent damage
on the tire if ever the tire collides on the scraper.
