Section 1: Nature of Mathematics

Mathematics is a useful way to think about nature and our world. We can see patterns and numbers in nature and the
world - the snowflake and honeycomb; tiger’s stripes and hyena’s spots; the sunflower; the snail’s shell, flower petals, world’s
population, the weather, among others.

Mathematics helps organize patterns and regularities in the world. It helps predict the behavior of nature and
phenomena in the world. It helps control nature and occurrences in the world for our ends. It has numerous applications in the
world making it indispensable.

After watching the video clips, find time to reflect and answer the following questions.
a) Is God a Mathematician?
b) What is mathematics?
c) Where is mathematics?
d) Why mathematics? (in your own understanding)
e) What role does mathematics play in your world?

Note: In your own words, answer each question in 3-5 sentences.

Submit your activity 1 output next session/meeting.

a) Is God a Mathematician?
Yes, this question is an omnipotent because God is really amazing that Mathematics can explain the world we
live in. The body parts that we have, the seahorses, the architectures that are appealing to our eyes, flowers like rose
and sunflowers, hurricanes and tornados, the snails and it is also seen in the Holy Bible where God commanded
Moses to build an arch. The mathematical formula appears in the structure of nature and it also proves that it was
designed and not a coincidence.
b) What is mathematics?
For me, mathematics is everything we see around us. Mathematics can explain also everything we have the
mobile phones, architectures, arts, money and etc. It also serves as a building blocks to have a balance in our
everyday life. Mathematics is not just a subject but the language of the universe.
c) Where is mathematics?
Mathematics is everywhere. In the video clips, I realized that mathematics is not just about finding the value of
x and y, subtracting, adding, multiplying, dividing but it covers also our body parts, our nature, the architectures, the
Holy Bible and the animals. I noticed that mathematics is the foundation of all things we see in this world.
d) Why mathematics? (in your own understanding)
Mathematics enhances skills that we have like problem-solving skills, creativity and critical thinking. It’s
important to explore Mathematics because it helps us to appreciate things that would not be notice. This is the whole
foundation of what we have right now.
e) What role does mathematics play in your world?
Mathematics is everything to me because it can explain my inquiries in life. It also enhances my brain in
different skills and learn new formulas to solve problems. In simple ways I already use mathematics so without
mathematics maybe our world would experience chaos.
