Subject: Solid Mechanics Code: CE-126

Q.1 What are the different ways of classification of loads acting on structure? What type of
stresses and strains are developed in a material of body due to application of external load.

Q.2 A hollow cast-iron cylinder 4.5 m long, 350 mm outer diameter, and thickness of metal 50
mm is subjected to a central load on the top when standing straight, The stress produced is 70000
kN/m2. Assume Young’s modulus for cast-iron as 1.5 x 108 kN/m2 and find
a) Magnitude of the load
b) Longitudinal strain produced
c) Total decrease in length

Q.3 The following observations were made during a tensile test on a mild steel specimen 40 mm
in diameter and 200 mm long.
Elongation with 50 kN load (within limit of proportionality) l = 0.031 mm
Yield load = 160 kN
Maximum load = 240 kN
Length of specimen at fracture = 245 mm
Determine:
a) Young’s modulus of elasticity
b) Yield point stress
c) Ultimate stress
d) Percentage elongation
Q.4 The figure below shows a steel rod of 25 mm 2 cross-sectional area. It is loaded at four points
K, L, M and N. Assume Esteel=200 GPa. The total change in the length of the rod due to loading
is
Q.5 A bar having a cross-sectional area of 700 mm2 is subjected to axial loads at the positions
indicated. The value of stress in the segment QR is

Q.6 A rod length L having uniform cross-sectional area A is subjected to a tensile strength force
P as shown in the figure below. If the Young’s modulus of the material varies linearly from  E1
to E2 along the length of the rod, the normal stress developed at the section SS is

Q.7 A steel bar is 1800 mm long; its two ends are 40 mm and 30 mm in diameter and the length
of each rod is 400 mm. The middle portion of the bar is 15 mm in diameter and 1000 mm long. If
the bar is subjected to an axial tensile load of 30 kN, find its total extension. Take modulus of
elasticity E = 2 x 105 N/mm2.

Q.8 An iron block of mass 30 kg is hanging from the two supports A and B as shown in the
diagram. Determine the tensions in both the ropes.
