ABSTRACT
As we all know that lockdown due to COVID-19 is having an adverse effect on
agriculture sector in India especially on small and marginal vegetable growers. Vegetables are
preferably consumed as fresh through daily marketing. The nation-wide lockdown has
entrenched the economy as well as the eco-system. The agriculture sector is facing a lot of
trouble with labourers and movement of goods across the country. Recently, Indian agriculture
suffered irreparable loss due to unseasonal rains and other day-to-day climatic problems.
Growers facing another hit due to disruptions from COVID-19 the major problems arising are
transportation facility, market shutdown and reduce in demand for fresh vegetables due to
direct supply in the marketing system, resulting wastage and rotting up of the farm produce
and farmers are not getting proper price of their produce.Vegetables are moderately to highly
perishable in nature and may cause losses, if not sold/ consumed well in time. The post-harvest
handling and processing can reduce immediate losses at farmer’s level. Number of methods
are described for processing and value-addition of vegetables and seed spices. Among these,
preparation of different types of pickles, chutneys, sauces, ketchups, preservatives, dehydrated
products at village level. In this direction- Women Self-help Groups (WSHG) can also play a
vital role in processing of seed spices. Like seasonal vegetables, seed spices crops (coriander,
fenugreek, fennel, nigella), turmeric can also be processed in many ways to boost up the
farmers income. The prepared products can easily be stored for some times at farmer’s level.
After overcoming from lockdown phase these processed/ value added products can reach to the
consumers with good quality.
