1. What is Ozone depletion?

Ozone depletion, gradual thinning of Earth’s ozone

layer in the upper atmosphere caused by the release of
chemical compounds containing gaseous chlorine or
bromine from industry and other human activities. The
thinning is most pronounced in the polar regions,
especially over Antarctica. Ozone depletion is a major
environmental problem because it increases the amount
of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reaches Earth’s
surface, which increases the rate of skin cancer, eye
cataracts, and genetic and immune system damage. The
Montreal Protocol, ratified in 1987, was the first of
several comprehensive international agreements
enacted to halt the production and use of ozone-
depleting chemicals. As a result of continued
international cooperation on this issue, the ozone layer
is expected to recover over time.

1.Before reaching the earth’ surface,
some solar radiation can be absorbed
by some gases. What are these gases?

➢What is ppb, ppm and ppt?
➢What is the difference of concentration and mixing
ratio?
Exercise
>The Hong Kong Air Quality Objective for CO is 10,000
μg/m3 (8-hour average). Please convert it to ppmv using
both equations in Lecture one.
* Read carefully, the question asked you use two equations to convert the concentration to mixing ratio!

Solution:

*v

* Unit conversion !
The composition of the earth’s atmosphere has changed in the past 200
years. What were/are these changes?

There have been significant increases in concentrations of CO2, CH4, N2O,

and tropospheric O3. There have also been decreases in stratospheric O3.
