Microwave Calibration
Microwave Calibration
Before you can check your microwaves you must first validate that your Thermocouple is working
properly and is accurate. Use the ice point calibration method below.
Use shaved ice from I.O. machine to make an ice slurry (shaved ice and water will be colder due to
surface area of shaved vs. cubed) or use cubed.
You must indicate on thermocouple variance relative to 32°F. Acceptable tolerance +/- 2°F.
If thermocouple is out of tolerance, and cannot be reset at the restaurant (Atkins’ thermocouples do
not have a reset), you must return it to the manufacturer for recalibration.
To validate your microwaves have been properly calibrated, use these microwave and power
test/calibration steps:
Measure 1 liter of water (33.8 fluid or weight oz.) into a plastic container.
Place the Thermocouple on Celsius using the F/C button.
Place the probe into the water and record the temperature (record in space A).
Place a lid on the plastic container and microwave for 62 seconds. Since this isn't a standard time on
the microwave, either press the 1:18 button and remove the container when it reads 16 seconds or
use the second hand on a watch.
Remove the plastic container from the microwave, stir the water, check the temperature immediately
(record in space B).
Subtract the beginning temperature from the ending temperature (record in space C).
Multiply this number by 90 (record in space D). This final number is the overall wattage output of
your microwave.
Allow a variance of +/- 10% on your calculations due to water measurement, exhaust vents, dirty air
intake filter and inaccuracies of the Thermocouple.
If your calibrations indicate the microwave is not operating properly (for example, a 1700 watt
microwave that calculates at 900), contact your regional facilities manager or local equipment
service agent immediately.
