Questions:
1. What are Koval’s “ten fundamentals” of top YouTube creators?
2. List some ways that YouTube content differs from traditional TV and movie content
using the ten fundamentals.
3. What three levels of targeting does Koval describe and how are they different?
4. What is the difference between “trending topics” and “evergreen topics?” Which
fundamental deals with these ideas?
Answers:
1. The Koval’s "ten fundamentals" of top YouTube creators are the following: shareability,
conversation, interactivity, consistency, targeting, sustainability, discoverability,
accessibility, collaboration and inspiration.
2. Some ways that YouTube content differs from traditional TV and movie content tends to
the fact that YouTube content is targeted at a niche audience, which is specifically
designed to be appropriate for the creator's content. As Richard Wiseman says, I think if
you make a video and it is only played on TV, the audience is not that big, but if you
make a video that is put on YouTube, it is distributed by several people and the public is
expanding. Through YouTube content creators can talk directly to the public or users
who watch them rather than through traditional television. Through YouTube you can
also engage the public, answer questions from both the public and the content creator, or
ask ideas on what topics to create content.
3. The three levels of targeting that Koval describe are: channel level, series level and
individual video level.
4. “Evergreen” content is always based on a topic that is relevant both now and for years to
come, and even if small parts of the content can be updated over time, this is largely the
same. “Trend” content is relevant now but can become irrelevant in a short period of time
such as a week or a month. Content in trends will quickly become outdated, but in the
short term it can create huge hysteria on the Internet.
