CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

Supplemental Material for Use With

STAR WARS: The Roleplaying Game
(West End Games)

VOLUME TWO
1992 - 1995

CHALLENGE Magazine (ISSN 0894-5535) had its origins in the Game Designers Workshop (GDW)
Journal of the Travellers’ Aid Society (JTAS), created in 1979 to support the Traveller science-fiction
role-playing game system. By the time JTAS had reached issue 24, GDW’s role-playing lineup had
expanded to include Twilight: 2000 (and later Traveller: 2300 (renamed 2300 AD), Space: 1889, and
MegaTraveller), so JTAS was transformed into CHALLENGE in 1986. CHALLENGE concentrated
on GDW published materials, but deliberately included coverage of games by other publishers
(including material for West End Games’ Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game).

CHALLENGE, in recognition of its roots in JTAS, continued its issue numbers in sequence from
JTAS; its first issue being 25. CHALLENGE continued through Issue 77 (1995). An Issue 78 was
planned but never published (and was to have included an unnamed Star Wars: The Roleplaying
Game article).

The publication history was sporadic with the initial issues being published quarterly. In Issue 34
(1988) it was announced that publication would begin bi-monthly in 1989. In Issue 48
(January/February 1991) it was announced that publication would become monthly beginning July
1991 (Issue 51). In Issue 68 (January/February 1993) it was abruptly announced the return to bi-
monthly publishing (beginning with that issue). The final nine (9) issues were erratically published
between 1993 and 1995
