Week 1 This week was spent on idea generation

What have you been asked to do? We have been asked to create two productions out of, a stop motion animation, music
video and short film, with the target audience of either 40-60- or 5-12-year-olds. The
short film has to be between 5-10 minutes with no dialogue with a strong narrative. The
stop motion animation has to be between 1-2 minutes, with all original Foley sounds.
Finally, the music video has to have parallel editing and a strong narrative. But most of
all, the productions created, have to be interesting for your target audience.
The two productions will be submitted by January 22nd and a pitch has to be presented at
the end of the unit.
Why have you chosen this target audience? I have chosen the target audience of 40-60, because I have a lot of people around me,
such as family, relatives and family friends who are in this age range, so I am able to
interview and ask them questions easily. I also grew up with people who were older than
me, due to being the youngest sibling, meaning I find it easier to relate and understand
those who are older than me. I think I would also enjoy making a piece for 40-60-year-
olds over a piece for 5-12-year-olds because it will allow me to make a more
serious/hard hitting piece, and my aim with most projects is to impact or make viewers
think about a topic after watching my production.
What two productions have you decided to I have decided to make a stop motion animation and a short film. My animation will be
make? How do they allow you to improve about the impact of HS2 for animals and their habitats, and my short film will be about
your skills? the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008.
Despite having a huge love for music videos, I wanted to push myself in areas which I
was not comfortable in. For example, short films make me uneasy, due to the fact I have
to write a script, something I am not very good at, and ask other people to be in my
productions, something I find difficult to do.
Doing a short film also allows me to use all the skills I have learnt over the past year in
the course, for example, I will be able to script writing, storyboarding, camera work and
editing, as well as focus on sounds and music use. This will give me an opportunity to
use these skills and hopefully develop them further, due to increasing my experience
with them.
I wanted to make a stop motion animation, due to this being one of my weakest areas in
production, and I would like to improve the quality of my animations. My aim is to
improve my skills in this area, so I can talk about the improvements I have made and the
way I have done my animation differently from my last animation, in my evaluation.
How did the focus groups help you to The focus group allowed me to understand other people’s perspectives and opinions on
select your idea? topics. When explaining my idea about HS2 in my focus group, my two interviewees did
not know much about the topic/barely knew it at all; I think this is because it does not
affect them as much as me, due to both of them living in different areas. This meant I
was able to get a grasp of how I need to approach my topic for people who may view my
production and may not be from my area.
When talking about the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008, it led me to the realisation
that everyone has a completely different perspective on the event, and everyone
experienced it differently. This is because I do not have any recollection of being
affected by the event, however, others remember small details of the way it impacted
them.

My focus group also allowed me to get different viewpoints on my ideas and expand
them, as well as seeing if other people thought they were suitable for 40-60-year-olds.
For example, I had a third idea where I was planning to make a short film about two
ghosts who try to find each other after they have died, but due to my focus group, I was
able to understand that this was not as relatable to my target audience as my other ideas
were.

Are you on track for the week? Yes, I am on track

What work needs to be completed for you N/A

Week 2 This week was spent researching target audiences.

What did you find out about your target Through my secondary research I learned that my target audience were very critical
audience through your secondary research? of things, direct in their words and actions, cynical of many things, financially
secure, self-sufficient and they also have a very good work-life balance. When
shopping they research a product thoroughly before purchasing and will be
sceptical when purchasing things. My target audience mainly enjoy watching TV,
reading, exercise and socialising. Media wise, they spent roughly 7 hours a week on
Facebook and the ways of consuming media is through newspapers, radio,
television, and magazines.
How will this help you in adapting your Knowing what my target audience likes has helped me to understand what I need to
idea to meet the chosen audience? do with my productions. For example, if I want to make a character relatable to my
audience, I will use the character traits or hobbies that my target audience also
have.
When I have finished my productions, I will also share them on Facebook, seeing
as this is the most used social media for my target audience, and if I am able to get
people to share my pieces on Facebook, I will be able to reach more of my target
audience.

How useful was interviewing people from I found my interviews extremely useful; this is because it meant I could truly
your chosen target audience? understand what my audience wanted to see from me and what they wanted and
like in a piece. It was validating to know, that when I asked them if they liked my
ideas and if it would suit their age range, they agreed. Knowing that my target
audience liked my ideas helped.
In my first interview, my interviewees were immensely useful, they gave me a few
extra ideas and ways to expand my piece, which would also suit my target
audience, for example with my idea about the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-200,
they said that it might not be relevant due to the current climate of the world and
how Covid has caused a new recession, and upon contemplating this, I think it
would be more reasonable for today’s standards. Despite the 2007-2008 recession
being relevant to them, due to them living through it, I think it would make more
sense if modernised it.
We also discussed the new happenings around HS2 and the fact a 300-year-old tree
has been cut down due to HS2. This inspiring the idea that I could do a timeline of
this tree with significant events happening around the tree, and then the tree being
cut down by a human.

Was it difficult to get a large response to I found it quite difficult to get a large number of responses. My Dad sent my survey
your survey? How could you improve the to around 50 people and my Mum sent it to around 10 people, however, I only got
number of respondents for your FMP? 20 responses. This meaning I only for around a third of the responses I was hoping
for.
For this project, I did not send out my survey to a Facebook. For my FMP I could
send out my surveys on Facebook and get people to share this as much as possible.
I could also get my parents to send my survey to as many people as possible and get
them to share the survey around.
What have you found to be the key things When targeting my audience, I think it is extremely useful to find things they are
that you should be targeting your audience interested in and relate to, meaning they may see themselves or someone they know
with? What makes this audience different in the things they watch. This making a piece more enjoyable for them to watch.
Also mentioning or using topics which interest them or are suitable for their age
to the one you never chose?
range, for example someone aged 40-60 is not going to be very interested in a show
aimed for children with basic language and no strong, hard hitting moral.
I think with 40-60-year-olds, it very different from the other target audience of 5-
12, because they are completely different age groups and
at different stages of their lives. 5-12-year-olds are in a way
still experiencing the world and socialising with others and
have stress free lives. However, with 40-60-year-olds, they
may have started to settle down, they might be married and
could have kids, and have a secure job. They have
probably experienced a lot in life and have a completely
different mindset to those aged 5-12

Are you on track for the week? I am mostly on track for this week. Some tasks took a lot longer than expected, so I
am slightly behind, however everything will be finished by Sunday evening.
What work needs to be completed in your My infographic and analysing my survey results.
own time?
Week 3 This week was spent researching codes and conventions

What genres have you chosen and For my animation I have chosen social realism and for my short film I
why? have chosen drama.
This is because for my pieces, I wanted to make my pieces
relatable to my audience, this is because I want to target my
audience as best as I can. My two ideas are based on real events
which are occurring now, and they are topics which are of interest to my audience, meaning,
I can hopefully reach my target audience as best as I can.
These are also genres I am not very familiar with, and I wanted to research the codes and
conventions of them so then I could try to understand the genres better.
What have you learnt from your Through my secondary research I have learnt that I need to be very direct and clear with my
secondary research this week? visuals. Due to my piece having no dialogue, I need to convey my message in a way my
audience can understand easily. If my piece is boring or it does not make sense, a viewer is
likely to not enjoy my piece or stop watching it all together.
Every aspect of a production is hugely important, especially when there is no dialogue to
communicate a message. This means, I have to plan everything very carefully, so then my
audience can fully understand my piece.
How will this influence what you I need to think about costume, lighting, colours, props, and location/set.
include in your productions? Lighting and colour can help the viewer to understand the situation and understand the
emotion a character is feeling, for example, grey and dark tones are associated with negative
feelings.
Sound is very important in a piece- too much sound and it will become overwhelming and
too little will a scene boring. I need to focus on Foley sound and music to enhance my piece
and interest my viewers and also immerse them into the production. Music can influence a
scene massively and can change the mood of a scene dramatically. This is why I need to
research and fine different pieces of music and Foley sounds, which will help me to convey
my message the way I want it to.
What are the key conventions for In a drama, everything is realistic. So, lighting wise I will be using outside light, and the
your chosen genres? What MUST lights inside the house, with very little extra lighting, unless if it is necessary, if there is too
you include for it to be that genre? much artificial lighting, it will seem fake and it may take away the seriousness of my piece.
The costumes and locations will also be realistic- I want my audience to feel like they can
relate to my characters and see themselves in the piece, because it can help keep a viewer
interested.
Camera shot wise, dramas usually have close ups and two shots. Both techniques show the
emotion of a character. Two shots show the audience two people at once- this giving realism
to the piece because when people talk it is similar to a two shot.
In a drama piece, Propp’s character theory can also be applied, due to a drama being
realistic, we can find nearly all 8-character types.
Are you on track for the week? Yes, I am on track
What work needs to be completed N/A
in your own time?

Week 4 This week was spent researching codes and conventions

What have you learnt from your I learnt the importance of colour and lighting. For example, in the short film “The Black
primary research this week? Hole” the audience can understand the atmosphere and emotions of the officer worker,
due to the lighting being bleak.
Small background noises can really aid the audience into small details of a piece. Details
such as sharp wind noises in the short film “Alma” display that it is winter in the short
film, despite this not being a crucial piece of information to the piece, it added to it and
made it feel more immersive.
Also, when working on a piece with no dialogue, it is important to have good actors
which can portray emotions and the feelings of a character, due to there being no
dialogue for the audience to rely on for information. Actors and visual aids need to be
used to showcase what is occurring in a piece and how this effects a character and if it is
good or bad for them.

What developments do you need to For my production to fit into the genre of drama, I need to
make to your production for it to meet include, natural lighting and colour, two shots, close ups,
these codes and conventions everyday locations, social issues are addressed, impact the
audience, a journey and emotional peaks and troughs.
requirements?
Because these are the codes and conventions of a drama, I
should include these in my production, to ensure it can fit the genre.

When I come to writing my script, I will need to ensure that I have all of these elements,
so I may need to go back and add things in, such as camera angles, so then it can fit the
genre. I may also need to accentuate some elements of my piece to make sure they can
be identified and then my short film can be identified as a drama.

How did processing the results of your Doing research on the codes and conventions of dramas and short films in general, I was
research help you to understand it able to understand what I needed to include in my piece to allow it to fit the genre. For
thoroughly? example, now when I start my planning, I can be direct and specific with my lighting,
colour, and camera angles, because I know that they fit my genre. This will hopefully
increase the quality of my productions because I will know what I am doing and why I
am doing it.

Are you on track for the week? What I am behind on my analysis of my six videos. I am finding it difficult to find six short
work needs to be completed in your films and animations to analyse, so I am going to analyse some scenes from TV shows
own time? which are in the drama genre. For example, I know that The Crown is considered a
drama, so I shall use a clip from this.

Week 5 This week was spent planning your productions

What did you learn from your I learnt that it is best to have all your planning to be of high quality. Thorough planning
planning? can allow the filming process to be as smooth and easy as possible. The more well
prepared a piece is, the better.
Production schedules allowed me to ensure that I was staying on track, but to also plan
what I needed to plan and organise before shooting. For example, I knew I had to finish
my script at least a few days before filming so then I could go through it.

How will this be useful as your My planning will allow me to be organised and keep me on track with different things.
production process continues? When writing my script, I would write down the props or sounds that I would need in a
scene, this would help me remember what I needed, and also made the process more
efficient.
I kept a list of every prop I would need for my animation, which was a large amount. This
helped me to stay organised. I was able to follow my list whilst I was making my props for
my animation.
With my sounds list, this will help me in the editing process, because I will know what
type of music and sound effects I will need, and then I will not have to waste time with
having to research or think about what I will need.

What issues did you encounter There were very little issues I had when planning. However, I realised that when planning,
whilst planning and how did you you need to finish your script first and then everything else can be started. For example,
overcome them? when planning my short film, I knew what I wanted to do and the main premise, however I
found it difficult to actually write my script and come up with an elaborate narrative.
This then effected how I was unable to do a story board and prop and sound list. Script
writing is also something that I struggle with as I am not a very creative person. However,
I overcame this by just sitting down and focusing on my script one afternoon and then
finishing it. The next day I also read through it to ensure there were no mistakes.

How much work did you complete I did the majority of my planning outside of lessons, I find it easier to work this way. I
outside of the lessons? wrote both of my scripts at home, this way I could focus on what I was doing. I did most
of my storyboards at college and then finished them at home, I
then used the scanner in college, so then they could look
professional. I started my production schedule during class time;
however, it took longer than I had expected so I finished it on the
Monday afternoon at home after class.

Are you ready to film next week I am prepared for my stop motion animation filming; I just need to
and if not, what do you need to make the models which I am doing over the weekend.
complete to be ready? However, I have not finished my planning for my short film entirely, I will complete this
after I have finished my animation/when I am not at
college shooting my animation.

Are your storyboards up to I think they are to a good standard. I was able to use the scanner at college, instead of just
standard? taking a picture of them, this helped to improve the quality of them when I uploaded them
to my website.
I kept my storyboards basic, but still gave enough information about what was occurring in
my scenes, with visual and text aids.
Week 6 This week was spent filming

How did you find the filming The filming process was good, it was fun to be able to approach stop
process? motion animation with more knowledge and skills around the topic, due to the last time I
made a stop motion animation, it was my first time.
The process was pretty smooth with some issues along the way which effected my piece in
different degrees- some being pretty minor and some being slightly significant to my
piece.
I found it very hard to get into the rhythm of animating, due to the lengthy process,
however, once I got into that rhythm, I would be working for 20 minutes then taking a
small break, so then there was a lower chance of making mistakes.

Did you encounter any problems During my week of filming, I encountered a lot of problems. At the beginning of the week,
during filming? How did you after leaving my set in the studio, my tripod had been moved and my set had been knocked
overcome them? over. There was not much I could do about this, so moved my set back to where it was
originally (as close as it could be)
On Tuesday, my camera suddenly ran out of battery when it was still half charged. I
overcame this by borrowing a camera and SD card from college for the day- despite
putting it on the same settings, it meant some of my footage is a completely different
colour to my other footage. I will overcome this by trying to fix it in editing and make it
blend with the rest of my footage as best I can.
Throughout the week, my set kept falling over multiple times, meaning all my footage
looks like its in different angles. I overcame this near the middle of the week where I
changed what was propping up my set and taping it to the table and making my prop up
heavier, it rarely moved after that and when it did, it was easier to fix and less frustrating.

After reviewing footage, what do I needed to reshoot my scene of the moon landing, this is because some of my extra props
you feel you need to reshoot? were in frame and at other times, the props I wanted to be in frame was not in frame when
I needed them to be.
I also had to delete some footage, due to it being repeats of the same photos, or
miscellaneous photos of where I was starting of ending a scene with my “continuous
shooting” option on.
What new techniques from your I realised through my previous stop motion animation unit, that it is more enjoyable to
previous units have you tried to have multiple characters or things moving at the same time, and to make sure something is
use? always moving. So, this time, I tried to improve the quality of my piece and have multiple
things going on even if they were simple, for example, I had multiple characters, such as
multiple women in protest at one time. In my last stop motion animation, I realised when I
was editing that it was hard to understand the storyline of my piece due to my production
having too much plot for a 30 second video. So, this time, I tried to make my plot as
interesting as possible, but keeping it condensed and not having too many events
occurring, so it is not overwhelming and my audience can understand my piece as best as
possible, so then it can be impactful and educational. .
Are the locations you filmed For my stop motion animation, I filmed in the studio with a set of a field. I used this
suitable to your production? because it was a good base for all of the scenes I was using.

Are you keeping up with your Yes. I aimed to finish my filming on Friday. I had originally planned to check over my
production schedule? footage and reshoot during the Winter holiday, however, I found it easier to reshoot on the
Monday after I had finished, due to leaving my set up in the studio over the weekend.
What footage still needs capturing? Overall, I have finished the shooting for my stop motion animation, however, I just need to
look back at my footage and reshoot some scenes if they are inconsistent with other scenes
or if they need improving.

Week 7 This week was spent filming

How did you find the filming process? The filming process went very well and very smoothly. I
shot with my two actors on two different days. My actors
were very easy to work with and barely anything went
wrong, so my shoot was efficient, and I was able to finish
my shoots both under two hours.
I was able to shoot during the Christmas holidays, meaning I
had a lot of time to reshoot if needed and I was able to take
my time with going over planning and ensuring my piece was the best that it could
be.
Directing is not my strong suit and something I am not very comfortable doing,
however, my actors were very patient when I was explaining my ideas, so it was a
lot easier than usual.

Did you encounter any problems When filming, there were next to no problems that occurred. I was not able to keep
during filming? How did you overcome to my production schedule because I had to self-isolate over the Christmas
them? holidays. However, I was able to film on the day before my first week of editing
started.
During the first filming day, I was planning to use a laptop during one of the
scenes, but both mine and my actor’s laptops ran out of battery, so that interrupted
the filming for about 20 minutes, whilst we let the laptop charge.
Other than this, filming went smoothly and according to plan. I think this was down
to the flexibility of my actors and their availability and the pre-production planning
I had done before hand.
Before shooting with both of my actors, I made a simpler version of my script and
wrote down their actions and key points in the script, this way it was easier to keep
on track and not miss anything.
After reviewing footage, are you happy I am very happy with the footage I have. When filming, I ensured that I have
with what you have captured? multiple versions of the same scene just in case I wanted to use different angles in
the editing process, or if something was not right with a shot that I did not notice
until post-production. However, in some scenes, I wish I filmed them from a
different angle, due to the camera angles looking very basic and repetitive. In the
filming process, I tried to shoot scenes in different angles, however they did not
come out the way that I wanted to.
Also, in my piece, I wanted to use handheld camera instead of using a gimbal, so
then I can portray the feeling of unsteadiness and uncomfortableness for people
during this time of the Coronavirus recession, however, some shots are a bit too
shaky and unsteady. However, I think I can fix this in editing and try and merge
together my different takes of the same scene, to try and make it look better.

Have the techniques you planned on In my short film, I wanted to try and use long shots without it looking weird. I find
using turned out well? that when I try to implement long shots in my pieces, it looks out of place.
However, with this production, I used long shots to show my character outside of a
shop to give context of their location. I think it works well and will help my
viewers understand the piece and the locations used, however, I shall see if it works
well in the edit.

Week 8 This week was spent editing

How are you finding the editing My editing this week has been mostly relaxed. Because my piece is a stop motion
process this week? animation, I did not need to do a major amount of complex editing, other than to fix
mistakes/problems.
A few days before editing, I went through all my photos and deleted all of the
photos which were not needed in my production. I then compiled all of my photos
into my editing software and grouped it together so then it was a smaller file to
work with. I then started adding in the audios, which took the majority of the
editing time, because I wanted to ensure it all flowed and
none of the sounds were too loud or too quiet. I had also
found most of my audios that I was going to use during my
pre-production stage when I was making my sound list, so I
just needed to download these and find a few extra. When I
finished the audio, I did some colour correcting and then
added a few pieces of text.
However, I was unable to get other people’s opinions on my piece, so I am not
entirely sure how my production looks to others.
I found it very hard to get motivation at the start of the editing process, but I soon
remembered how much I enjoy editing audio, which made it a lot easier to want to
edit.

Have you encountered any problems I realised over the weekend that some of the photos that I took halfway through the
whilst editing? How did you overcome process had my hand in the shot. This meant I had to crop about 20 photos. This
them? was very irritating and was time consuming. It meant that the sizing of the pictures
changes halfway through the video. There was nothing I could do about this, so I
tried to make the transition between the section of normal and cropped photos seem
as unweird as possible.
Finally, during my production stage, my camera ran out of battery, meaning I had
to borrow a camera. I tried to make the photos look exactly the same with both
cameras, however this did not work, and my photos with the borrowed camera were
a lot brighter. This meant I had to edit the colours of the photos. I have done colour
editing a few times and I sometimes edit photography I have done in my own time,
so I had a bit of experience, so I played around with the brightness and exposure.
After a few minutes of playing around I got the photos to exactly the same colour
as the rest of my photos.

Are there any new techniques you are The editing was not very complex, due to my piece being a stop motion animation
trying to use during this editing and the production focusing more on morals and education. This led me to focus
process? my editing more on audio and the quality of it.
I spent most of my time searching for audios to use in my piece. I went through
different versions of the same sound effect I wanted to see what would work best of
my piece and what would sound natural.
This week I tried layering different audios and merging different audios. With other
productions I have just put audios together and edited them slightly, however this
time I tried my best to make my audios flow together as nicely as possible.
When in my piece I had multiple characters moving, I layered different audios of
walking/running, so then my piece would seem more realistic.

Are you on track with all of your I am mostly on track with my work.
work?
What work needs to be completed I would like to try to improve my editing of my stop motion animation, because I
outside of lessons? feel like the quality of it was not very good. I also need to finish this weekly blog
and upload it.
