PROBLEMS ON TURBOPROP
Problem # 1
A turboprop engine having 85% propeller efficiency handles 90 lbm/s of air flow with
compressor pressure ratio of 5:1. The HP turbine inlet temperature is 2000 R. The power
turbine has expansion ratio of 4, and inlet temperature 1688 R. The engine operates at Mach
0.7 under sea level condition with exit velocity 1.5 times the flight velocity. Assume power
turbine and gear box efficiencies = 100%, QR for fuel = 19000 B/lbm, γ = 1.4 and cp = 0.24
B/lbm R throughout. Find the following:
(a) Thrust horse power of Propeller (14542.1 hp)
(b) Thrust of Engine (11366 lbf)
(c) Engine horse power (18102 hp)
(d) Thermal Efficiency (11.6%)
(e) Propulsive Efficiency (89.3%)
(f) Overall Efficiency (10.3%)
Problem # 2
An aircraft powered by turboprop, is flying with Mach 0.7 at 30000 feet altitude (Pa = 4.362
psia, Ta = 411.7 R). The gear box efficiency is 0.85, the propeller efficiency is 0.8 and exhaust
nozzle efficiency is 0.95. The expansion ratio and efficiency of power turbine (LP turbine) are
4 and 0.95 respectively. The flow stagnation conditions across power turbine are: entry
temperature = 1600 R and exit pressure = 7 psia. The air mass flow rate through the gas
generator is 150 lbm/s and fuel air ratio is 0.022. Take for cold flow γ =1.4, cp = 0.24 B/lbm R,
for hot flow γ =1.3, cp = 0.297 B/lbm R and gas constant R = 53.35 ft-lbf/lbm R throughout.
Calculate the propeller and jet thrusts of the engine. (Ans. 14481.5 and 2977 lbf )

Problem # 3
In the above Problem, if inlet pressure of power turbine is 32 psia and nozzle efficiency is 90%,
calculate the optimum propeller thrust of the engine. (Ans. 17198 lbf )

Problem # 4
The following is the data of a turboprop engine flying with Mach 0.8 at an altitude of 20000
feet (Pa = 6.753 psia, Ta = 447.4 R):
Diffuser Pressure loss = 2%, Compressor efficiency = 0.82, Compressor Pressure ratio = 8.5,
Maximum cycle temperature = 2400 R, Combustion Chamber Pressure loss = 4%, HP turbine
efficiency = 0.88, LP turbine efficiency = 0.9, Mechanical efficiency of HP turbine and
compressor shaft = 0.8, Gear box efficiency =0.985, Nozzle efficiency = 0.97, Air mass flow
rate = 96.8 lbm/s, QR of fuel = 18600 B/lbm, Combustion efficiency = 100%.
Take γ =1.4 before combustion and 1.3 after combustion.
Find maximum thrust and corresponding TSFC of the engine.
