the impressionism, expressionism, avant-garde, and
the new and electronic music.

Modern Filipino compositions written, recorded, and


performed in the 20th century.

popular to the common Filipino and to the
“entertainment” circle.

New forms of music or revivals emerging from


traditional folk music infusing modern styles like
Jazz, metal, pop, rock, electronic, and chance, funk,
hip-hop, and dance.

Nicanor
Abelardo
• Born in San Miguel de Mayumo,
Bulacan on February 7, 1893.

• The son of Placida Santa Ana (church singer)


and Valentine Abelardo (an artist/photographer).
• At the age of five his father taught him
“Solfeggio and Banduria”.

• At 15 he enrolled at the UP College of


Music

• He composed University's official


anthem “UP Naming Mahal”.
• 1921, He obtained his Teacher's Diploma

certificate in Composition.

• 1924, He became the Department Head of

Composition in this university.


• His famous Works:

>Mutya ng Pasig, Nasaan ka Irog and Bituing Marikit.

• More than 140 compositions (operas, concertos,

symphonies).

• The Cultural Center of the Philippines main theater and

concert halls at the University of the Philippine’s College

of Music were both named after him.


Col. Antonio
Buenaventura
• He was born on May 4, 1904
in Baliuag, Bulacan

• In Grade 4 he studied
solfeggio.

• Became a clarinet player

of “Banda Buenaventura”
founded by his father.
• At age of 19 he obtained his teacher's diploma in composition
from the UP College of Music.

• Organized and led the UP ROTC Band junior Orchestra that


became the first collegiate orchestra in the country.

• He went to New York to study at the Institute of International


Education, granted by UNESCO.

• In 1939, He earned his military rank of Colonel and became


the music and band instructor of the famous Philippine
Military Academy (PMA).
• Conductor of Manila Symphony Orchestra
that toured Hong Kong, Japan, Guam and Hawaii.

• In 1945, he organized “PCB” later became “PAB“ which


much more symphonic and was “one of the best military
band” in the world.

• 1961, he became the head of University of Santo Tomas


Conservatory of Music.

• 1964, Became the director of University of the East


Music and Arts.
• He worked with co- national artist Francisca Reyes-Aquino
researching on music and folk songs for dances of other ethnic
groups.

• He became the conductor of the Peng Kong Grand Mason
Concert, the San Pedro Band

• The maestro retired as full professor from

UP College of Music in 1978.

solo instruments, chamber, band, and orchestral music.

in Manila.
• He is much known
“Mr. C”
• When he was just 6
his mother (opera
singer) died.
• He first took up
Bachelor of Science in
Administration in UPV. Ryan Cayabyab
• He worked as an accompanist for the (DBP Chorale)

>Development Bank of the Philippines Chorale to survive


his studies.

• Late Senator Salvador Laurel gave him scholarship

to pursue his music studies.

• He graduated from UP College of Music with the degree

>Bachelor of Music, major in theory.


• One album, most popular early recording where he personally
sang all the arranged parts.

• He also composed the music for famous musicale “Katy”

(which started running in 80's up to the present)
