BRIEF INTRODUCTION

In our previous lesson, you learned about the effective use of communicative strategies
in a variety of speech situations. We discussed that a communicator’s style of speaking

2
changes according to the context and how statements elicit various responses from listeners.
Understanding speech context, speech style, speech act, and communicative strategies play a
vital role in achieving communicative competence. But what do you think might happen if there
is a shift in speech context, speech style, speech act and communicative strategies? How will
these affect the people involved in the communication process, the accuracy of the message,
and the flow of communication?

As you learned in our last topic, communicative strategies are the most effective tool in
delivering and getting information from both speaker and listener. These are used to efficiently
share useful ideas to provide quality interaction in communication. A different communicative
strategy—that leads to effective communication—is needed for every situation. In our previous
lessons we discussed that each speech context requires an understanding of the speech act,
and with understanding comes an adjustment to speech style to ensure the delivery of the
message. However, we should also remember that a change in speech context, speech style,
speech act, and communicative strategy can affect the following:

1. Language Form – Language unite and divide people. Even when people are
communicating using the same language, miscommunications still happen when the
speaker uses terminologies that are not familiar to the listener. To overcome this kind of
miscommunication, the speaker must avoid using jargons (technical terms) or unfamiliar
words to clearly express his/her ideas. For instance, kids nowadays use words like lodi,
petmalu, and werpa which are not familiar to a certain age group. Because of this,
misunderstandings occur. The speaker must use layman’s terms or simple words that
are understandable by both the speaker and listener to avoid the communication
breakdown.

2. Quality and Duration of Interaction – Avoiding barriers is vital to keep the listener
engaged and involved with the conversation. That is why it is very important to recognize
and avoid such barriers. Adjusting by asking someone to minimize the volume or by
looking for a quiet place where you can clearly understand each other are just a few
examples on how to overcome these barriers.

3. Relationship of Speaker – The speaker should choose a familiar topic which he is

willing to discuss and explain at the extent of his knowledge. He/she should also initiate
the interaction and take control of the success of the communication by means of proper
way of delivering it. Likewise, it is important to consider the depth of the relationship to
the listener to avoid misunderstandings. For example, the way you communicate to your
teachers or superiors is different to how you talk with your friends or family members.

4. Role and Responsibilities of the Speaker – This serves as the lifeline of the quality of
interaction in communication because the speaker handles the pros and cons of the
feedback received. When these are met, the speaker creates a diversified way of
thinking on how to keep the interaction going. Moreover, the speaker should have
confidence and knowledge to express himself clearly and to balance different
perceptions and feedbacks from his/her listener.

5. Message – Conveying a message to other people clearly might sound simple, but it's a
process that is often fraught with error. Many people struggle to communicate effectively
– verbally and in writing. They impart thoughts and ideas that don't reflect their intended
meaning, and because of that the listener misinterprets or misunderstands the message
which results to confusion, frustration, wasted effort, and missed opportunities. Always
bear in mind that the message is the core concept of the interaction. To be an effective
communicator, you need to make sure that your messages are clear, concise, accurate.

3
6. Delivery – It is said that 10% of conflicts are due to difference in opinion while 90% of
those are due to wrong tone of voice. Proper delivery of message is very important in the
communication process. Your choice of words, the tone of your voice, and even your
body language is important for the receiver in interpreting the message. For example,
using an angry, aggressive voice only creates an aggressive response. So, before you
proceed with a message, think about what language to use to convey effectively what
you want to say. It is always better to use simple, straightforward, and specific words
and appropriate tone to avoid misunderstandings.

When communicative strategies are used effectively, both the speaker and listener can
improve their communication.

REMEMBER
Communicative strategy is the most effective tool in delivering and acquiring information
from both speaker and listener. This is used to efficiently share useful ideas to provide quality
interaction in communication. However, a shift in speech context, speech style, speech act, and
communicative strategy can affect the following:

Language Form - To overcome miscommunications, speakers must avoid using jargons or

technical terms or unfamiliar words to clearly express his/her ideas.
Quality and Duration of Interaction - This is achieved when the speaker and the listener are
able to exchange related information which improves their reception and overcome barriers in
their communication.
Relationship of Speaker - Speakers should choose a familiar topic which he is willing to
discuss and expound at the extent of his expertise.
Role and Responsibilities of the Speaker -These serve as the lifeline of the quality of
interaction in communication because the speaker handles the pros and cons of the feedback
received.
Message - It is the core concept of the interaction. To be an effective communicator, you need
to make sure that your messages are clear, concise, accurate.
Delivery - It is always better to use simple, straightforward and specific words and appropriate
tone to avoid misunderstanding.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Think of a certain situation in your life where you unintentionally say something that
offended a close friend or a member of your family. What did you say that lead him/her to
misunderstand your words and how did you resolve a conflict?
In an essay with a minimum of 500 words, discuss why your communicative strategies
should change as there are adjustments in every speech context, speech style, and speech act.
The following rubric will be used in assessing your essay.
To give you an idea on how you will organize your thoughts in your essay, you may use
this suggested pattern. In your introduction, tell something about the situation. In the body,

5
explain what communicative strategies did you use to resolve the problem and how did you use
them. And lastly, in the conclusion part, write about your own insights and realization that you
learned from that experience.
