CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION TO CDS

Day by day technology within the field of surveying and mapping, surveyors must be up-
to-date to satisfy the ever-increasing demands for challenging tasks. The introduction of
trigonometric calculators and other scientific functions meant an enormous increase in the speed
of work in the office and within the field in order to obtain results. Improvements in the accuracy
of the calculations were also considered due to a reduction in blunders and a more accurate
determination of trigonometric values. Computer-aided design has improved the speed of
completion of the office work of geomatics professionals. Not only the desired lines drawn, but
also the lettering of the amazing combination of the computer and the plotter made the task more
convenient. Even the calculation of the lines themselves, whether to decide the subdivision lots
or right of way, could now be computed effortlessly.

Regarding that, Foresoft Pty Ltd Australia has created Civil Design and Survey (CDS)
software that can help surveyors which consists of a group of powerful design systems that
interface seamlessly with advanced digital terrain modeling and CAD engines of industrial
strength. To design roads, earthworks, sewer, stormwater, and water networks, CDS also provide
us with advanced design features and functionality. After all, the modules combine to form an
integrated framework for designing civil engineering infrastructure, as well as data collection,
drawing, and surface modeling. In providing dynamic, CDS also introduces a new display method
which is important to easily view larger data sets. It also makes it easy to design multiple paths.

Other than that, potential add-ons and upgrades are also allowed by CDS as it consists of
2 or 3-dimensional layer tools that can be built. In the 2D system, roads and other services are
constructed in 3D and are used in housing and industrial estates. Other than that, CDS' 3D
architecture allows us to combine individual grade point calculation, string grading includes
vertical curves, and 'ezi-sense' models that adjust ground conditions according to particular
parameters. CDS also enables us to create plates, layouts of subdivisions, annotated contour
plans, profiles, and cross section diagrams directly to every printing system in Windows. In
addition, prior to printing, CDS can also insert borders, text, and symbols into the plan inside CAD.
In any compatible CAD kit, we can also build a DWG file for further enhancement.

2
There are several tools that can be used for the CDS implementation, which includes open
job, zoom, pan, modes- display, modes input, layers, query, joins and multiple windows. For
instance, CDS is a very easy software to handle and use. Based on the title of this project, all of
the Science Geomatic students part 3 are required to complete this project by using CDS. There
are 2 questions total but the second question has two parts. The questions must be answered
with a correct traverse coordinates, correct coordinate of each STN, correct declaration of AT/BS,
correct position for stadia electronic: road, building, tree and drainage, insert the correct details
of Cross and Long section and lastly produce survey plan for road curve, cross section and
longitudinal section. In this project, procedures of work for every exercise, output for every
exercise and also the conclusion for this project are provided.

CHAPTER 2 PROCEDURE OF WORK

2.1 Question 1

1. The CDS software was double clicked to open it.

2. The New Job button was clicked on to create a new job.

3. The file name was entered for the new job and then the Open button was clicked on.
Example, cds(3)sem3.cdsdat

4
4. Continue the work for Appendix A. The Entry menu was pulled down and the Reduced
Level option was chosen.

5. The Level Number was written as 1 and the Path for the file was confirmed. Then, the
New button was clicked on.

5
6. The Road Number for the level sheet. Number 1 was inserted for the first data and 2 for
the second data.

7. The Reduced Level Book Sheet appeared on the screen as below:

6
8. The data from Appendix A was transferred to the Stadia Electronic Table and saved.

9. The data was then transferred to the database by clicking the Option menu and
choosing the Store Data in Database from the drop down option.

7
10. The output is like this:

11. The coordinates of each point were altered according to the data given. The alteration
was made by clicking the Query button and key in the correct Northing and Easting.

8
12. Next, for Appendix B and Appendix C select the ENTRY menu and choose Electronic
Stadia. In the Table Selection, choose STADIA and click New.

13. Insert all the data for Appendix B and Appendix C that have been given like below,

9
14. Go to the OPTIONS menu and choose Store Data In Database. You will see the outcome
from the data like below,

10
15. Go to STRINGS menu and click Add… to make a string from one point to another point.

16. Attach all the points that should be attached. Fill in the ID and FOLDER for every different
string.

11
17. To insert Symbols, go to ENTRY menu, choose Symbols and click Insert a Symbol...

18. Type the name of the symbol, Example: tree and choose which symbol that is suitable.
Adjust the scale and the rotation. Click on the point where it is supposed to have a symbol.

12
2.2 Question 2a

Procedure of developing the cross and longitudinal section in the study area:

1. From the data obtained from Appendix A then continue to develop the cross and
longitudinal section by clicking on the Contour menu and the Surface Parameter was
chosen from the drop down option.

2. The Profile and Section Selection was chosen. The Use Road Number option was
clicked on, Line 1 and Line 2 boxes were checked and Road Number was specified.

13
3. The Volume option was chosen and the Overlay Road Number and Base Road
Number were specified.

4. Next, the Road menu was chosen, Display & Plotting was clicked on and followed by
Display Profile.

14
5. The outcome is as below;

15
6. Then, to determine the quantity of material that has been moved, the Road menu was
pulled down, Display & Plotting was chosen followed by Display Section.

16
2.3 Question 2b

Generating Road Curve at point 39 and 46, with 15m radius.

1. The Cogo menu was pulled down, Curves option was selected followed by IP &
Radius.

2. Point 39 was keyed-in in the IP Point box. Then, the line beside the point was clicked on
to define the Bearing In and the other line (below) for Bearing Out. The Radius was
stated as 15 and then Apply was chosen.

17
3. Point 46 was keyed-in in the IP Point box. Then, the line beside the point was clicked on
to define the Bearing In and the other line (below) for Bearing Out. The Radius was
stated as 15 and then Apply was chosen.

CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, CDS could be a very helpful software which will help to generate the
model plan because it provides the users with plenty of tools which are easy to handle and
understand. Furthermore, CDS is also capable of accepting various formats of total stations and
electronic data recorders. Data processing needs decent perception in order to understand the
raw data format in the stadia window and only provides two coordinate methods, such as the
bowditch method and the least square method. In this generation, the world is getting more
advanced within the scope of technology as technology helps us make our work more efficient
and faster. Despite technological advancements, there are professionals who, for various
reasons, continue their day-to-day operations with time-tested field techniques. The program
discussed here meets the specifications effectively and reliably for data processing and
performance delivery in all circumstances regardless of the field procedure. If it is not today,
computers will surely become the key protagonists in all surveying fields, either in academic
institutions or in industry, as technology storms the entire world. The applications of specialised
computer software and hardware are increasing with a declining percentage of human
participation and involvement in daily activities within the civil engineering field. A surveyor
should have the required attributes in keeping with the profession's aspirational vision
and one of these attributes is to understand the way to deal effectively with the acceptable
computing applications for ease of work and to maximize productivity. Thus within the
dearest interest of all those involved during this particular field to familiarize thoroughly
with the current and upcoming developments of computer software and hardware. In a
nutshell, this project can be completed successfully by using CDS.
