Unit1 sub 4.

The nervous system along with the endocrine system work to control all activities within the human
body. It does this by communicating messages between the brain and the body very quickly using
nerve impulses.

Nerve impulses have a domino effect. Each neuron receives an impulse and must pass it on to the
next neuron and make sure the correct impulse continues its path. Through a chain of chemical
events, the dendrites which is part of a neuron, pick up an impulse that’s shuttled through the axon
and transmitted to the next neuron. The entire impulse passes through a neuron in about seven
milliseconds.

Transmission of a nerve impulse along a neuron from one end to the other occurs as a result of
electrical changes across the membrane of the neuron. The membrane of an unstimulated neuron is
polarized meaning there is a difference in electrical charge between the outside and inside of the
membrane.
