MORTAR JOINT PROFILES
& BRICKWORK BONDS

QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP
The quality of workmanship on site can have an overriding effect on the

MORTAR JOINT weather resistance of the brickwork.

• Bricks should be laid on a full bed of mortar

PROFILES & • All cross joints and collar joints should be fully filled
• Immediately after the brick is laid, excess mortar should be struck off the
external face of the work and off the internal faces of the leaves of cavity walls
BRICKWORK BONDS • Care should be taken to ensure that mortar is not scraped onto the exposed
face of the brick

Make the right start for a great finish... MORTAR JOINT PROFILES
One of the factors that influence the long term performance

this illustrated guide to mortar joints
Brickwork that remains saturated is more susceptible to frost damage.
and brickwork bonds. The choice of joint profile should therefore be based on performance
criteria, as well as aesthetic considerations.

THE MOST COMMONLY USED JOINT PROFILES

Curved Recessed (Bucket Handle)

This joint gives an improved appearance over a flush
joint, with little reduction in its strength. Owing to
the compressing of the joint and the superior bond,
it has good weather resistance and is suitable for all
grades of exposure.

Flush
This gives maximum bearing area and is often
favoured when coarse textured bricks are used.
With some brick types the finish may appear a
little irregular. Suitable for moderate and sheltered
exposures as the mortar joint has not been
compressed by the finishing tool.

Weather Struck
This produces a contrasting effect of light and
shade on the brickwork. Such joints, when correctly
formed, have excellent strength and weather
resistance and are suitable for all grades of exposure.

Squared Recessed (Raked)

This can produce interesting articulated joints, but
weather resistance and strength will be considerably
less than with other joints. Use only with frost resistant
bricks in sheltered exposure conditions. The recess
should not exceed 3-4mm and is not recommended
with full fill cavity insulation.

Note: Recessed joints should not be used where there is a danger of excessive wetting.

MORTAR JOINT PROFILES
& BRICKWORK BONDS

BRICKWORK BONDS
Bonding in brickwork refers to the pattern in which they are laid. They usually overlap between courses in
order to distribute load and provide stability. Bonding can also be used for decorative purposes.

GOOD SITE PRACTICE

GOOD SITE PRACTICE

The essential guide to good site
practices with hints on what to avoid
to help you create that great finish.

MORTAR
The mortar should be correctly proportioned and thoroughly
mixed. Nothing but clean water should be added later and
mortar should not be ‘knocked up’ (re-mixed) after it has
started to set.

STORAGE
Bricks should be inspected on delivery. They should
be unloaded directly onto a hard standing that is:
• Firm • Well drained
• Level • Puddle free TOP TIP:
ALWAYS COVER
BRICKWORK
WHEN WORK
PROTECTION STOPS
All walls must be covered when work stops.
Rain on new work can cause:
• Colour change of mortar • Lime stains
• Saturation • Efflorescence

REMEMBER
• Cover your brickwork!
• In rain, snow and frost use
a water resistant cover
• In dry weather use hessian
or a similar product
11
GOOD SITE PRACTICE

APPEARANCE
In order to achieve a uniform
appearance throughout the building
and to avoid the possibility of
patches or bands of differing shades
(see adjacent), bricks should be used
from a minimum of 3 packs at the
same time. Placing of all the bricks
from one pack in one part of the
wall should be avoided.

EFFLORESCENCE
Efflorescence is visible as a harmless deposit of water soluble material
on the surface of brickwork consisting of naturally occurring salts from
within either the clay or the mortar.
Efflorescence commonly occurs in spring, following wet winter working
conditions, when a building dries out for the first time. As moisture rises
to the surface of the brickwork to evaporate in temperate weather, the
soluble material is also carried along and left at the face where it will
then weather away.
To minimise the occurrence of efflorescence:
• Bricks should be stacked onto a clean, firm, level surface and
protected from rain, mud splashes, etc.
• Newly erected masonry should be covered to protect cavities and
stop masonry becoming saturated.
REFERENCE PANEL
The reference panel should be built before facework • Incorporate the appropriate DPC’s,

standards of workmanship, and establish the visual
acceptability of the chosen bricks. The panel should
include the bond selected for the finished work, the
correct mortar mix and the specified joint profile.

The reference panel should be:

• Erected on a level firm foundation

GET IT RIGHT
DESIGN
Wasteful cutting can be avoided and brickwork appearance enhanced if the
overall lengths and heights of walls and door and window openings

GET IT RIGHT are all multiples of the brick unit + 10mm joint size.
Table 1 shows how horizontal brickwork dimensions will assist in achieving this
objective. A more extensive table can be found on our website.
Setting-out brickwork For example, if a span of brickwork is required to encompass 4 whole bricks

co-ordinating size measurement is 900mm (4 brick lengths plus 4 x10mm

MOVEMENT JOINTS
All building materials move when subjected to temperature and moisture changes. Brickwork is no exception. 3m 6m 6m 3m
Movement joints (often referred to as expansion joints) must be provided at a maximum of 6m spacing with
a maximum 3m from a corner or change of direction. They must commence at concrete foundation level and G.L Coping
Pier
continue through the coping/capping courses. Additional movement joints will be required at 3m centres
through the copings/cappings. A 10mm joint width will normally be sufficient. To increase stability at the Foundation

movement joint position, piers can be built at either side.

FILLERS AND SEALANTS REINFORCEMENT – BED JOINT TYPE

Filler materials should be easily compressible by pressure between finger and Untied walls of two separate skins are unlikely to perform satisfactorily. Where the

tying together. Stainless steel bed-joint reinforcement every third course will achieve
Cellular polyethylene and cellular polyurethane are ideal. Impregnated fibre boards

must not be used with clay brickwork as they do not compress easily and will
restrict expansion. The sealant should be a polysulfide or low modulus silicone.

COPINGS AND CAPPINGS

This is where water will ingress the brickwork if not properly constructed. Clay brick
copings and cappings must always be F2 (frost resistant). Of particular importance for
walls constructed in areas rated as severe or very severe exposure to wind driven rain
such as Scotland, Wales and the North and South West of England the wall should be
protected by overhanging copings with a drip groove to help shed water.
A flexible (roll type) high bond bitumen polymer DPC must always be provided and
sandwiched in the mortar directly beneath the coping course. For clay copings the
Ibstock patented ‘Caplock’ system will provide additional security, particularly in areas
where vandalism is prevalent.
Forticrete Stone or Supreme Concrete copings are also ideal available in profiles to
assist in shedding water. Brick on edge cappings are not recommended, particularly in
areas of severe exposure to wind driven rain.

REINFORCEMENT – POCKET WALL CONSTRUCTION

Additional strength and stability can be obtained by introducing reinforced concrete pockets into When a suitable height is reached a temporary shutter board completes the box which is
the construction. This is achieved by casting into the foundation 10 or 12 mm diameter mild steel filled with well compacted concrete. Remember to remove all mortar droppings from the
reinforcing bars which are accommodated within a vertical slot formed in the rear skin of the wall. bottom of the pocket before placing the shuttering and pouring the concrete.

TRADESMAN ® RANGE

TRADESMAN® RANGE
More than a match
for the originals

From the 1930’s onwards many houses were built using

bricks made from distinctive lower Oxfordshire clays. Our
Tradesman® range has been meticulously designed to blend
in with these bricks wherever they are used.

Trademan’s superior durability and strength means they are

ideal for use in most locations, such as boundary walls and
wall cappings or to match existing brickwork for extensions
and other refurbishments.

They are also popular with builders because of their

excellent colour consistency and are also easy to lay with
minimal wastage.

RED / RED MULTI HANDMADES & WATERSTRUCKS

BEAUTIFUL
RED BRICKS...
SWANAGE BESPOKE BLEND
KIMCOTE HALL, KIMCOTE, LEICESTERSHIRE

Kimcote Hall, a new family farmhouse, utilises a blend of Swanage

handmade facing bricks laid in a Flemish bond with a strong plinth
detail firmly grounding the building. Stone coursing and detailing
including corbels and parapets are utilised.

The external appearance of the dwelling is finished off with highly

detailed chimneys incorporating stone banding and brick, giving the
external appearance a varied interesting profile.

Both the standard and circular plinth details perfectly match the
main facing brick, enhancing the overall impact of the total building
rather than creating individual features.
24
RED / RED MULTI HANDMADES & WATERSTRUCKS

THE PERFECT FINISH

TO YOUR PROPERTY...
A rich history of beautiful
handmade bricks

The Orangery at Cane End, Reading is a beautiful

example of using new bricks to blend in with much older
brickwork whilst introducing traditional-type features
such as detailed dentil brickwork and semi-circular arches
over deep feature windows.

The brick blend was selected to match existing walls

and barns. The front elevation is formed of a one-brick
thick external cavity in Flemish bond overlooking the pool.
Particular attention was paid to arching and corbel specials
in the cornice to re-emphasise the arched openings.

All specials and elevations were evaluated by the Ibstock

design service, including all copings and corner bricks.
Rebated specials form subtle panelling effects on the
columns between arches, breaking down the scale and
adding relief.

Glazed or burnt headers were
often an accidental phenomenon
of traditional kilns. The distinctive
patterning formed by the
headers is often seen in many
solid walled buildings.

We have carefully recreated the authentic

appearance for use with modern cavity
wall construction. These are available in
three ranges; traditionally glazed, kiln burnt
naturally fired bricks and hand tinted bricks.
