Re: GEOCHEMICAL SOIL AND GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION IN

LESVOS ISLAND | TECHNICAL REPORT

Ref: [1] reg. no. 1160/24-12-2020 (21SYMV007975086) Contract Νο 9/2020 between the Ministry of
Migration and Asylum and the Hellenic Survey of Geology & Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) in
relation to «Geochemical soil and groundwater investigation close to landfill area and other areas of
the Regional Unit of Lesvos, North Aegean Region for establish a new Hosting Facility for third-
country nationals and stateless (article 8, Law 4375/2016)»

Dear Secretary-General,

Following the Contract Νο 9/2020 between the Ministry of Migration and Asylum and
the Hellenic Survey of Geology & Mineral Exploration (Ref. [1]) we attach the Technical
Report regarding the geochemical soil and groundwater investigation in selected areas
of Lesvos Island.

During the investigation a total of thirty-five (35) soil samples (topsoil 0-15cm) and
three (3) water samples were collected from designated areas in Lesvos Island and
tested accordingly. All soil samples were dried (<40oC), disaggregated in an agate
pestle and mortar and sieved through a stainless-steel mesh to isolate the <200mesh
soil fraction.

A detailed geochemical testing analysis was carried out by the Analytical Laboratories
of H.S.G.M.E. mainly in relation to heavy metals elements (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As,
Cd, Pd) at the soil samples using ICP-OES and ICP-MS. Moreover, laboratory analysis
for secondary trace elements and total organic carbon was caried out at the soil
samples, as well as physicochemical and heavy metals elements analysis at water
samples.

1/3
More specifically, twelve (12) soil samples were collected from the Mavrovouni Camp
area, where eleven (11) of them were located inside the residential area and one (1)
outside that perimeter, in an area which is used for administration and not residential
purposes.

Based on the laboratory testing results, the concentrations of heavy metals elements
of the samples located inside the residential area are considered within the acceptable
geochemical threshold limits set for residential use, according to national and
international scientific bibliography.

On the other hand, the lead (Pb) concentration at the soil sample located outside the
residential area perimeter is considered above limit set for residential use, but still below
the limit set for industrial use.

It should be noted that the concentrations of heavy metals elements of the soil samples
taken from the rest of the designated areas (e.g. «Ktima Eleftherakou» and «Plati –
Agriomelissa», «Agra» or «Apothika» and «Agia Paraskevi») are considered within the
geochemical background values for Lesvos island soil, thus acceptable for residential
use.

For further information in relation to the above please advise the attached detailed
report, laboratory testing analysis and maps.

Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,
Director-General of H.S.G.M.E.
