Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Bombay M.tech. TA(Aerostructures)

As a child I was intrigued about how heavy machines like aircrafts/spacecrafts fly. This
became the impetus for my interest in finding out more about how these extremely
intricate machines operate. I drew my inspiration from the likes of Kalpana Chawla,
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Vikram Sarabhai by whose efforts the Indian Aerospace
sector developed leaps and bounds. Gaining knowledge about these machines always
excites me and I am fond of learning more. In order to fulfil my desire to learn more, I
pursued B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering and found out about the importance of
research and development of materials used in aircraft and spacecraft structures. This
led me on to develop an interest in aerospace structures.

I found the study of fibre reinforced plastic/composite materials very interesting. The
use of FRP in aircraft has a great effect on fatigue strength, design flexibility and
corrosion resistance. Using FRP reduces the amount of scrap produced and is also
suitable for mass production in complex geometric shapes. I want to study
the development and application of composite structures technology to design and
manufacture of products which has an impact on the strength, safety, comfort and
efficiency of an aircraft.

The aerospace department of IIT Bombay will provide me an opportunity to study the
impact of fibre reinforced plastic composite on the design of an aircraft. The
Department of aerospace engineering of IIT Bombay pioneered work within the nation
on development and application of composite structures technology to design and
manufacture of products from aerospace as well as other engineering fields. Examples
of such products and applications include fan blades, salinity gates, railway toilet,
chemical containment, and replacements for certain metallic components of MiG 21
aircraft. Some of this work has been recognized by an award of excellence from the
Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. It would be a great
opportunity for me to join an institution with such achievements in the related field.
