Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

The new generation plays a salient role in enriching the music of one’s country. It

is believed that the more the music gains patronage from this group of people, the more it

is viewed as refined and ameliorated.

Music holds a strong and conclusive purpose in reflecting and shaping the culture

of every country. Here in the Philippines, OPM or the Original Pilipino Music held

accountable for that purpose. OPM originally referred only to Philippine pop songs and

ballads, which appealed very much to the Philippine mass, right after the collapse of its

predecessor, the Manila Sound in the 1970’s. It is later on and presently referred as any

music composed and performed by a Filipino artist and became hugely popular with the

peak of the Metro Manila Music Festival or Metropop in 1972 (The Status of Original

Pilipino Music in the 21st Century Youth Subculture, 2016).

Today’s generation, millennials to be specific, have been patronizing foreign

music a lot without considering our own music. Youth patronizes International, K-Pop, J-

Pop, etc. preferentially over OPM. Due to lack of commercialization, OPM little by little,

finding its way to its devastation. Because of this, lots of OPM advocate have been

alarmed, including the researcher.

As what singer, Noel Cabangon stated, the future of Original Pilipino Music

depends on whether the public still patronizes the local music industry. Clearly, there is a

big disaster approaching if this issue marked underrated.

Background of the Study

Domination of foreign music is very evident in today’s generation. In

convergence with this, is the approaching devastation of OPM. The researcher assumes

that, lack of information and dissemination of OPM in schools and academes take part in

this issue that our Music is facing. The researcher has read the K to 12 Curriculum Guide

for Music and he discovered that OPM, as part of Contemporary Music, haven’t been

given emphasis on the area of instruction. Actually, even in the glossary section of the

whole K to 12 Curriculum Guide for Music, OPM or Original Pilipino Music wouldn’t be

seen. This made the researcher to assume that OPM is being underestimated and hadn’t

been given emphasis on the teacher’s area of instruction,

The abovementioned prompted the researcher to conduct a study on student’s

patronage for Original Pilipino Music. He believed that through contextualizing lessons

in Grade 10- MAPEH , the Philippine Music, OPM in particular will be enriched.
Objectives of the Study

This research aimed to enrich the Music of the Philippines through enhancing the

patronage of students for Original Pilipino Music.

Specifically, the study sought to achieve the following objectives:

1. Determine the student’s level of patronage for Original Pilipino Music in terms of

their:

1.1 knowledge about OPM,

1.2 preference of music (Local or Foreign) and,

1.3 level of appreciation for OPM songs

2. Contextualize lesson about OPM in Grade 10 MAPEH pointing out:

1.1 meaning of OPM,

1.2 History and,

1.3 Notable Artists and their Works

3. Assess the acceptability level of the proposed lesson; and

4. Correlate the variables assessed under the patronage level of students for OPM.

Significance of the Study

As this study strived to enrich the Music of the Philippines by enhancing the

patronage level of students for OPM through contextualized lesson for Grade 10

MAPEH, this study would be beneficial to the following:

Teacher. Since teachers, specifically MAPEH teachers are the primary preserver

of Filipino culture and music in school, this study would aid them to be aware that

dissemination of information about OPM would be really helpful for them and for their

role as a preserver of culture and music.

Administrators and Curriculum makers. This study would evoke

administrators and curriculum-makers to take into consideration on subjoining OPM

lessons to the K to 12 Curriculum.

Students. The focus of this study is on the patronage of students for OPM. The

more this music gain patronage from this people, the more probability it will be

considered to be refined and ameliorated. This study could be the eye-opener for the

students to patronize what is OURS. By that, they would enhance their sense of

nationalism. Moreover, this would also give them chance to promote our culture and

music.

Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit. This study would serve as their

voice not only to the students but also to the people concerned, that our OPM should be

commercialized, patronized and enriched by our fellow Filipino.

Future Researches. Future researchers could make us of this paper. The findings

and conclusions of this study could provide references for future proponents who wish to

venture a research which somehow similar, relatable, and complementary to the ongoing
study. Thus, the beliefs and ideas on this research paper could serve as resources for

future studies.

Scope and Limitation

This research focused on the patronage for Original Pilipino Music of selected

Grade10 students in Luis Palad National High School for the School Year 2017-2018.

Further, the results of processing the data gathered served as the basis to propose the

contextualized lesson for Grade 10 MAPEH.

The study was limited to using mixed method of research for it involved

descriptive and inferential statistics using percentage and weighted –mean respectively as

its quantitative nature and checklist questionnaire supported by interview as its

qualitative techniques. The checklist questionnaire consisted of two segments: Part 1

elicits the student’s preference of music (foreign or local) while Part 2 refers level of

appreciation for OPM songs. Meanwhile, the structured interview comprised of 5-10

questions pertaining to the student’s knowledge about OPM.

There were 50-100 Grade 10 students who assessed their patronage level for

OPM. They were chosen through random sampling. However, the selection was limited

only in Luis Palad National High School.

The time frame of the study was from September 2017 to April 2018.
