Course Purpose: This class will impart knowledge from the fundamentals of the engineering science of fluids and how these generalized
expressions, primarily the conservation law variety, become valuable engineering analysis expressions that can be used as an aid in
hydraulic design. Students will exercise these analysis skills in the following areas: forces on submerged surfaces, pipe flow, pump
sizing, and open channel flow, including channel selection and sizing, and natural channel hydraulics.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Use of conservation laws: Mass Balance, Momentum Balance, Energy Balance. (ABET 1: an ability to identify, formulate, and
solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics)
2. Develop engineering expressions used in Hydraulic design: Hydrostatic Forces, Pipe Flow, Head Loss, Friction Factors,
Hydraulic Grade Lines, Turbo Machinery, Pump Curves & Sizing, Open Channel Flow. (ABET 1: an ability to identify,
formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics; ABET
2: an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health,
safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors)
Homework: The total number of assignments for CENE 333 is eight, with a total number of 38 problems. Submit your homework to
bblearn according to the due date posted on the tentative schedule (one pdf file; I won't grade other file formats such as .JPEG, xlsx,
docx, …). You should solve each problem on a separate page. You do not need to rewrite the problem description (optional) but do
include the problem number (see a sample great, good, and unacceptable submissions in the homework folder in bblearn). The homework
solution will be posted automatically to bblearn on the due date. The homework grading rubric is as follows:

Reading Assignment: You will have six reading assignments to push you to go over your textbook before coming to class (refer to the
tentative schedule). These assignments will include ten easy multiple-choice problems (except for RA3 and RA5 with 15 problems).
You will have two hours with two attempts (2*2 = 4 hours) to complete the reading assignments. The highest grade will be used in
the calculation of your final grade. This component is available ahead of time. One lowest grade will be dropped to accommodate for
family emergencies, sickness, and any other unforeseen circumstances. No makeup is available for the reading assignments.
Quiz: You will have six quizzes with five problems. Failure to achieve a minimum average of 50% for quizzes (all six) will result in an
automatic grade of F. You will have one hour to complete the quiz. This component is available ahead of time. One lowest grade will
be dropped to accommodate for family emergencies, sickness, and any other unforeseen circumstances. No makeup is available for the
quiz.
Exam: There will be three exams, each forming 20% of your final grade. Each exam is a multiple-choice test with 10 or 11 problems.
The exams will be released at 8:00 am on the due date and will be available until 11:59 pm. Exams must be completed in two hours, so
make sure to start at least two hours before 11:59 pm. Makeup exams in the case of an emergency are available if you have a documented
report. The makeup exam format may be different from the original exam.
Project: As a part of this course, you will be assigned a real-world project. This project will prepare you to experience Water Resources
Engineering in the industry and will test your knowledge of pipe and pump design. You should submit your design through bblearn
according to the due date posted. All designs must be in one excel file with multiple sheets.
Readings and Materials: This course is developed based on Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering Systems, 5th edition, 2017 by
Robert J. Houghtalen, A. Osman H. Akan, Ned H. C. Hwang.
Attendance and Makeups: Class attendance is not mandatory. If you opt to attend the class, you should actively take part in
discussions. My lectures are a collection of design questions, and we will work together to solve them (have your calculator with you
all the time). So, be prepared and ready during the lecture. Due to COVID-19, in-person attendance for this class will be limited based
on the last name (A-M: Tuesday, N-Z: Thursday).
Submission Quality: All assignments are expected to meet minimum professional expectations meaning that there must be a legitimate
attempt at legibility, completeness, and overall quality. Assignments that do not meet a minimum level of professionalism will be
returned without being graded and cannot be resubmitted. Even if you receive full credit, compare your work with the solution posted.
Your submission is in pdf, so a high-quality scan is appreciated. If you do not have access to a scanner, use the CamScanner app.
Late Work: Any homework/quiz/exam submitted after the due date/time will be counted as late. Late submission will not receive any
credits. Missing a class is not an excuse for turning in late work. If you are absent from a class and do not submit your work, then it will
be counted as late.
Grade Appeals: Any questions regarding grading of submittals must be requested within three working days of receipt of the graded
submittal.
Online Resources: Use of any online resources such as chegg.com, coursehero.com, and … is forbidden. If your solution is similar to
the official textbook's solution manual, I will recommend sanctions based on NAU academic integrity policy.
Extra Credit: All exams are curved upward based on class performance. You will also receive an extra two credits for submitting the
end term evaluation.
Cell Phone Policy: In all exams and quizzes, cell phones are to be turned off and put away. If you communicate with a cell phone during
a quiz or exam, you will have committed academic dishonesty and will receive a failing grade in the course.

Appropriate face masks or other suitable face coverings must be worn by all individuals when present in classrooms,
laboratories, studios, and other dedicated educational spaces. To maximize the benefits of physical distancing as an
important strategy to help reduce community transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, instructors may implement mandatory

Note 1: Branching pipe systems (section 4.3) will not be covered this semester. However, I would like you to go over this section in
your textbook. This topic will not be tested in exam, quiz, and homework. But there are concept questions from this topic in your
reading assignments.
